Is my dog's Gabapentin dose causing unsteadiness and confusion?

Pet's info: Dog | American Eskimo Dog | Male | neutered | 18 lbs

You American eskimo and was given 100mg of Gabapentin for pain...is that too much because he is having side effects from it. We already brought him to the vet's twice for unsteadiness, and sleeping alot. He is eating and drinking a blain diet right now and has stopped the Gabapentin. They never did X-rays but they did do blood work a week ago and everything was good. Could it just be side effects making him unsteady and seem confused? The picture is him eating but standing like he is fighting.

Poor Levi. The 100mg is a little above the standard dosing, but if the Gabapentin has been stopped, I would expect the side effects to stop soon too. Keep an eye on him, and if he is still acting this way tomorrow, consider bringing him back into the vet.

Both of hear medications are within the published dose ranges for a dog Kimber’s size, but gabapentin can sometimes cause sedation and this could be the culprit. You may want to give your vet a call and see if they might recommend reducing the dose or even skipping a dose.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Hoss. Gabapentin can cause sedation and ataxia (wobbly gait). He may have been so nervous earlier that you are just seeing the full effects of the medication now. Each dose typically lasts 8 hours. I would not give him any other medications u less his veterinarian has directed you to do so. If you are concerned though, he should see an emergency veterinarian. I hope this information helps!

It's difficult to say, because the weakness, lack of appetite and drowsiness could be signs of the arthritis not being controlled well. Gabapentin could be causing these signs, but it would be suspicious of some other cause if this suddenly started happening. I also worry about the paracetamol being responsible for this. Paracetamol is not commonly given to dogs for pain, because it can be toxic to the liver and stomach. Considering all of this, it's really best to have your vet evaluate Rocky and advise any necessary medication changes. They will be able to help narrow-down the cause of this and ensure he gets the appropriate treatment. I hope that helps and Rocky gets better soon.

Yes this can be a side effect of the gabapentin, or tramadol if your dog is on that for pain. I would lower the dose by half and speak with your veterinarian about it to see if they want you to stay on the lower dose, stop the medication, or switch to another pain medication. As the healing progresses you shouldn’t need as much medication and hopefully you can discontinue it soon as these are unwanted side effects. Thanks for using Boop by Petco to help you care for Bode.

Nikolai should be okay as far as toxicity goes. 300mg is a lot but not at the point at which you would see liver toxicity or other adverse health problems. However, that being said, if he is still lethargic and acting abnormal, I would recommend taking him in to be seen by a veterinarian and have his blood tested to establish a baseline as well. Thank you for using Boop by Petco! The dose Peanut ingested is about three times the upper end of the daily dose for a dog his size. Gabapentin commonly causes signs such as lethargy and difficulty moving/disorientation. Peanut may need supportive care such as fluids, administered by a veterinarian if he develops these signs. In the meantime, I recommend keeping a very close eye on him, and having him seen by a vet right away if he develops the signs above. I hope all is well!

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor Milo! Gabapentin can cause sedation alone and even more so with tramadol. My starting dose for Milo based on the weight you provided is 400mg every 12 hours. It is absolutely fine for you to go lower and increase the dose slowly based on Milo’s response. I hope this helps and I wish you and Milo the best!

My dog has been on gabapentin 100mg per day for 2 weeks (for pain). He has twitching now and is somewhat lethargic. Can we just stop the medicine?
Gabapentin carries a recommendation to slowly wean off the medication because seizures have been associated with humans stopping the medication suddenly. I have attached a handout on Gabapentin below. https://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&S=0&C=0&A=2764 Part of the decision to suddenly stop the Gabapentin or wean if down slowly depends on the dose and how long a dog as been on the medication. It looks like Angus is on a low dose and has only been on it for a short period of time, so you certainly can discuss stopping it with your veterinarian. However, what you are describing may be a sign of pain not a side effect of the Gabapentin, so you may need to actually increase his dose of Gabapentin or change to another pain medication if Angus is still painful. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Mia. Gabapentin has a very wide dosing range. The amount given will likely make her sedate, but should not cause her any long lasting harm. Give her next dose back on schedule if she is not too groggy. If so, you can wait an extra hour or two to give it more time to wear off. I hope this information helps!

My 1 yr old Jack russell mix, weighs approx 30 to 35 lbs just ate 300mg of Gabapentin that I was trying to give to my other dog. This was about 20 minutes ago. Should I be concerned. He did ingest the whole 300 mg.
Thank you for providing Cooper's weight in your question, it's very helpful in answering! In veterinary medication, Gabapentin has many uses, such as treating seizures, pain, and anxiety. For example, if we were to use Gabapentin to treat anxiety, it can be used in a dose range of 5-30mg/kg up to three times daily. If he is 30 pounds, that's about 13.6kg. If we dosed him at the max of 30mg, that would be 409mg of Gabapentin he would be allowed to have at one time. This means that the amount he ingested (300mg) is a safe amount for him to have, but I expect that he will likely be very sleepy from this pill. I hope this helps!
