How to tell when my dog can be with male dogs after her heat?

How will I know when my dog can be back around male dogs after she goes in to heat? Like are there any physical signs that will let me know she is no longer able to get pregnant?

Yes, there will be. Millie will stop bleeding, her vulva will shrink (but will never go back to it's previous size), and the vulva won't be as red. I would wait a few days after the bleeding has stopped before bringing her around other dogs.

A dog's heat cycle usually lasts 2-4 weeks. To be safe, I would wait until your dog's vulvar bleeding has stopped for a whole week AND her vulva has returned to its normal size/is no longer swollen. My dog is in the middle of her first heat cycle. I’ve been monitoring it to know when it’s over so I can schedule a day for her to get spayed. She seemed to stop bleeding, and then I noticed that she was swollen near her vaginal area. Is that normal
Yes, the vulva is normally swollen during the heat cycle. The swelling will go away when then heat cycle is over. Be aware that your dog will be able to conceive up to three weeks from the day she stops bleeding as she now is in heat. The time she was bleeding was preparing for the heat (pre-estrus). The best time to spay is about three months from the day she stops bleeding.

The hormones can stay around for several weeks after a dog in heat is spayed, so you can expect some bleeding for another week or two. The vulvar swelling should decrease some after that, but I will say that for some dogs the vulva stays large after just one heat cycle.

My dog is in season and keeps bleading from the genital area is there anything you can put on it ?
Yes, they do make doggie diapers with removal pads. I have seen some clients even fashion children's diapers on their pets (you must cut out a hole for the tail). This must be changed a few times every day or as it gets soiled. If you do not plan on breeding Millie, if she gets spayed, then she will not be able to have puppies and she will not have a heat cycle either. Hello, the heat cycle occurs in several stages and not all dogs will exhibit similar signs. Some dogs will develop vulvar swelling anytime from the onset of bleeding to 1 week after bleeding. Some dogs may not have vulvar swelling or it maybe minimal swelling that it is hard to notice. If you are planning on breeding her, to determine the best time, you may check her progesterone levels with your primary care veterinarian or allow her to stop bleeding before bringing in a male. Hi my dog is in her heat. She has stopped bleeding for a few days now. I noticed her vulva is a little dark on the skin, when you look from behind. It's not the fur but the skin near the tip. What's that?
She is going out of heat and you will Roxie the swelling start to decrease. If there is no mucous vaginal discharge and she is acting normally, then I would not worry about the skin changing colors. There is not a known condition that causes this, but it is normal and usually will turn back with time. You may notice this happen on her belly too and it does not have to be related to a heat cycle

my bitch puppy stopped heat bleeding just over a week ago, we have just reintroduced our male dog to her and he is trying to mount her, if we let them do their business will she get caught?
Typically when a bitch stops bleeding, it means that their heat is over, and if it stop over a week ago, then it's not likely Misty could get pregnant. Given that some dogs can bleed very little during their heat, so little that owners don't notice, I would keep them apart for another week to be safe.

My dog's vagina never shrunk down after she was in heat. Her bottom two nipples are also enlarged and feel swollen when pushed on. She is 100% not pregnant.
It is not unusual for the vulva to remain swollen for a period of time after the "heat" cycle is over. It can take several weeks following estrus for the vulva to shrink back down in size, but it will never go back to the size it was before the first heat cycle. How can I tell if my dog got pregnant, her breast our swollen a lot and she is just was in heat ,not her genial area is still swollen and she stopped bleeding over a week ago.
If Cali stopped bleeding over a week ago, it's still too early to tell if she is pregnant or not. Her nipples and genital area should go down not long after a heat ends. Even if she was pregnant, it would still be too early for her nipples to enlarge in response to a pregnancy. You can wait at least another three weeks then take her into the vet for a blood test looking for the hormone relaxin. This will be present in her blood if she is pregnant. You can wait six weeks instead and then take her into the vet for x-rays or an ultrasound to see if she is pregnant or not. This will also tell you how many puppies she is carrying. Best of luck.

Actually while she is bleeding she is in pre-estrus. When the discharge becomes fainter and more transparent she is actually nearing estrus, ie becomes fertile. Now is the dangerous time, ie for the next three weeks you will need to watch out that she does not get in contact with a male. Unfortunately males can smell a female in heat for more than 2 miles away and will try to even break in to wherever your dog may be housed. I think you may want to keep the puppy panties on her in order to avoid an "accident". She will not need to see the vet unless she starts to drink and urinate a lot and gets a yellowish or greenish discharge. That would point to a uterine infection.
