My dog has an anal gland infection. What can I give for her pain?

My dog has gotten her anal glands emptied but one has Reuter’s causing an infection. What can I use as an antibiotic and pain med until I can afford her meds that the vet perscribed. I can’t buy them til next week. Anything would help as she’s very uncomfortable

There are no OTC pain medications you can give Meeka. Many human ones are toxic to dogs, and can be fatal if given. Antibiotics are prescription only. The only way to get these medications is to have her seen by a vet.

My dog is 5 years old and two days ago he went to Petco and got groomed and we they emptied out his anal glands we think they went to deep, so now he is very sensitive and when ever he gets up he hurries too sit down. I really want to know what to do
Do not give him any over the counter human pain relievers, like Advil and Tylenol, as they are toxic to dogs. The best thing would be to have your vet take a look at him to determine the source of his discomfort. He could have a problem with his anal glands or possibly his tail or back. Your vet can do an examination and then prescribe medications to treat. He may need an antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, and/or pain medications.

Unfortunately there are no safe OTC pain relievers you can give Meelo. Many human ones are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. You will have to take him into the vet to get safe pain medications for him, and I recommend taking him into as soon as possible today.

No, human pain medications are not safe for dogs. Many are toxic and can be fatal if given. If Mia is in a lot of pain, you need to take her into a vet immediately to get pain relief. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website. Best of luck.

Hi, my 10 year old Tibetan spaniel x had an anal gland abscess that the vet drained yesterday. She said there was a lot of pus. It is still really swollen and my dog hasn’t been to the toilet since. My vet gave antibiotics but no pain relief tablets.
Anal gland fistulas are usually very painful. I would recommend going back and asking for several days worth of pain medication (do NOT give human ibuprofen or acetominophen as those can be deadly to dogs), and an Elizabethan collar if you don’t already have one one to prevent licking. Feeding just boiled rice and chicken for 2-3 days is an option (unless Mojo has a chicken allergy) to feed a low residue diet that will be less painful to poop out. Good luck!

I took her to the vet for yelping and whining yesterday when trying to get up, on the couch, bed, and even floor. She was reluctant to get up, licked her belly and butt a lot. When we took her in the expressed her anal glands and took a urine sample
Poor Maiya! You did the right thing by taking her into the vet. It will take at least 24 hours for you to see an improvement in symptoms with the antibiotics, but the pain meds should be kicking in by now. She likely feels pretty terrible if she has infected anal sacs, and it's not surprising that she isn't 100% just yet. I'd let her stay off the couch and stay on the floor is she wants. She needs to rest and allow the medications to fight the infection. Be sure to give all medications as directed, and keep giving it even if she appears better. If she still isn't wanting to get on the couch in the next 48-72 hours, then I would be concerned that she may have another problem causing her pain such as her back, hips, or hind legs. At that point, I would take her back into the vet for another exam and possibly x-rays. I hope this helps!

Hi there. Expressing the anal glands is not overly painful unless they are badly infected, and does not normally require sedation. But it can definitely be uncomfortable, so it's not unusual for pets to vocalize when it's done - just like for other minor procedures like vaccinations, nail trims, or blood draws. No, it is not safe to give any over-the-counter pain medications such as Tylenol or ibuprofen to dogs. If this is a common problem for your dog, you could ask your veterinarian about having some type of pain medication on hand at home for these situations.

Hi. Unfortunately there are no safe over the counter medications for cats or dogs. They metabolizes medications very differently from humans, so many of them can be toxic. You will need to get a pain medication and diagnosis from your veterinarian. Good luck.
