My dog ate a dead house gecko. Is it toxic? What symptoms to watch?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | neutered | 2 years and 4 months old | 11 lbs

Teddy was found chewing on a small house gecko that was dead. We don’t know if he found it dead or caught it alive. Should we be concerned? It’s been an hour. He seems fine and is resting like normal.

Common geckos are non toxic. At worst, you may see some stomach upset (vomiting or diarrhea). This can usually be managed at home with a short fast followed by a bland diet fed in small, frequent amounts until symptoms resolve. If they don't, see your veterinarian. Monitor for lethargy, loss of appetite or abdominal pain. These are symptoms that should be addressed by your veterinarian.
