My dog is in heat but not bleeding. Is this normal or a vet issue?

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 11 months old | 79.36 lbs

My 2year old Labrador is on her 3rd heat. However, I saw a few spots for the 1st 2days and it has not happened after that. She is eating and playing normally but also keeps on licking herself or sits down abruptly as she feels that she has the flow but there is no blood stain. This is not how it happened the previous 2times. Please suggest if this is normal or needs a vet's attention. Thank you

This is normal. Dogs have can silent heats where they go into heat but show no signs of it. They can also heats where they don't bleed as much. This does not require a vet visit. I hope this helps!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding your dog. A dog's heat cycle can definitely affect attitude and appetite. This should be temporary. If she begins to show other signs of illness such as vomiting, diarrhea, coughing or sneezing, then she will need to see her veterinarian as there will be another cause of her inappetance. My pet started bleeding(1st heat cycle at 8.5 months) from last Sunday. . Since then it is very silent ,not that much active and sleeps a lot. . .is this very early ,Need for any special care,change in diet needed. . . ??
Normally, bitches in season do not behave very differently from their usual selves. Since it is her first heat, there may be a problem showing up that was not evident before her reproductive organs became active. Or, it could be something else altogether. Your best bet is to take her to the vet for a thorough exam to determine an accurate diagnosis and, if necessary, appropriate treatment plan.

If you know it is past time for her to be in heat and other signs are beginning you could wait another week to see if there is any blood or you can have your vet take a look at her. Your vet could do a vaginal cytology to tell you more about what phase of her heat cycle she may be in. If she is not acting herself, not eating or drinking or seems lethargic at any time, I would strongly recommend to have your vet take a look at her. I hope this helps!

I have a 1 year old Golden that went into her first heat. It lasted 26 days and ended 22 days ago. Now she is dripping blood again. She is acting normal, eating and playing. I read young dogs may have abnormal heats.
This is true. It could be normal for her but since this is her first round, I would have your vet take a look at her to ensure there isn't an infection since this he is first round. Your vet will be able to ensure she is healthy and doesn't need any treatment.

It's all good Mariah! It's not silly at all. I wouldn't worry that Mia doesn't want to mate with Asher, she isn't fully mature physically or emotionally. You don't want to mate them anyway. This sounds normal.

Hello, the heat cycle occurs in several stages and not all dogs will exhibit similar signs. Some dogs will develop vulvar swelling anytime from the onset of bleeding to 1 week after bleeding. Some dogs may not have vulvar swelling or it maybe minimal swelling that it is hard to notice. If you are planning on breeding her, to determine the best time, you may check her progesterone levels with your primary care veterinarian or allow her to stop bleeding before bringing in a male. The bleeding can be heavy at times, it occurs to prepare the womb for fertilised eggs. This means the old lining of the womb gets expelled in bits and pieces, which lays blood vessels open which therefore bleed. Eventually the womb will grow a new lining and the vessels will close. Once all this is done, you dog will be in estrus and able to conceive for up to three weeks after the bleeding stops. You may want to check Leah's gums once in a while. If they are pink, all is well, should they turn white, then she needs to be seen by a vet right away.

Yes, it can be normal. Often times though, they have gone into heat, you just didn't notice. Some dogs keep their vulva clean so you don't notice any bleeding. If you are worried then I suggest you take her to your vet for a breeding soundness examination.

Hi there. It's certainly possible that this could be a "silent" heat, as not all dogs have bleeding from the vulva during their heat cycles. It sounds like she's showing other normal signs of heat, such as vulvar swelling and standing for mating. The only way to know for sure what is going on with her heat cycles would be to see a veterinarian who deals with reproductive issues, for testing such as vaginal cytology, progesterone blood levels, etc. Without this information, it's all just a guess :)
