Why is my dog vomiting bright red blood and acting lethargic?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Male | neutered | 3 years and 7 months old | 17 lbs

My dog began vomiting yesterday which appeared slightly red in color. then began eating grass. Throughout the night he vomited again with red being a bit more noticeable. This morning he has had several bowls and vomited two more times with blood (or as I assume it to be) and began acting scared, rubbing his face, and shaking slightly. He is very lethargic. The blood is not deep dark more bright colored What could cause this?

It sounds as Nemesis is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. it could also be due to ingestion of a foreign body material. i would recommend taking him to the vet the first chance you get, he will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection he will need an anti vomiting injection, antibiotics and a special food for a few days in order to get better. If the vet thinks it is more serious he will need a blood test and possibly an ultrasound in order to find out what is wrong.
