My dog yelps when pooping, but his poop looks normal. Vet needed?

Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Male | neutered | 3 years and 7 months old | 6 lbs

My dog is yelping when he poops, the poop is normal no objects, blood or change is color or firmness. He’s still very active and eating and drinking. I’m not sure if I should take him to the vet?

It's not normal that he's yelping when he's pooping, and it could be that Harley's anal sacs are impacted causing him pain when he poops. I would take him to the vet to have this examined, but it's not an emergency. If your vet is open on Saturdays, take him in tomorrow if possible. If not, make an appointment for him for next week. Poor Delgado! The yelping indicates that something hurt or really upset him! I would recommend to take him in the see the veterinarian today if possible. He could be severely constipated. He would also be trying to pass something that is causing pain in the colon. He could also have a significant anal gland infection or tumor. It’s best to get this figured out quickly before something gets worse, especially since you have not seen him have a bowel movement in a few days. Chronic fecal retention can cause some long term effects. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions.

Hi sam is 9 weeks old he has settled in great is eating normally and drinking normally he is being a normal happy puppy is not losing weight but when he is going to poo he gets really frantic and crying but stops as soon as poo comes out is this norm
No this is not normal and indicates there may be a source of pain and discomfort around the back passage causing some reluctance to empty his bowels. Anal gland issues would be quite common and your vet or vet nurse can check and empty them for you if required. Ensure he is up to date with worm treatments also as they can cause discomfort in this area also and that stool is not too hard or soft resulting in straining

Can you please try and explain to me why my puppy was squealing very loud and running when he went poop
Poor Bud'Dee! He could have eaten something that has gotten stuck trying to come out - this can happen if they eat fabric, hair, etc. I would look at his anus area and may sure there isn't poop hanging out that he can't expel of completely. If so, you can GENTLY pull and see if you can help him get it out. If it doesn't come easily, I would stop and take him to your vet. If you don't see anything, then I would just take him to your vet for them to check him out. It is obviously not normal for them to scream when he has a bowel movement. I hope this helps!

My puppy had his anal glands done today and now when he tries too poop he yelps!! Is this normal??
Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor Ollie! It isn't normal for a dog to cry during defecation. It could be that the anal glands are inflamed from being full or from the pressure of being expressed. If it continues call your Vet they may just prescribe something over the phone or want to recheck him. I usually prescribe a steroid taper for things like this. Good luck!

Watson has a bloody stool today. (Blood and feces on tail and in stool) Acting normal still has appetite. Should we take him to the vet emergency or monitor to see if it persist then take action. -Thanks David
If he’s otherwise normal you should be fine watching him tonight. He could have a ruptured anal abscess, or be passing a bone. He could also have a mass inside the rectum. Severe bloody diarrhea in a dog that is lethargic and not eating is a medical emergency but this sounds like he’s stable so bring him to your regular veterinarian in the morning so they can diagnose and treat his problem. My dog can't poop Get very sick Can't get a vet until Tuesday
Depending on the length of time that has elapsed since his last bowel movement, and if he is actively straining to defecate, this may or may not be an emergency situation. Based on what you have written, you seem to think he's quite ill and in need of medical attention. While I appreciate you can't get to your regular vet until after the holiday weekend, it may be in his and your best interest to take him to the ER for an immediate work up. There are several different causes for inability to defecate including generalized constipation, some sort of obstruction / blockage, certain masses in / around the GI tract, organ enlargement elsewhere, prostatic enlargement, and some less common neurologic causes. A thorough diagnostic work up and physical exam will need to be performed before making a determination as to the root cause of Hunlee's issue. Hope this makes sense.

I would recommend to take Chewie back to the vet for a prostate exam and an x ray. You want to make sure that the colon looks normal and there's no obvious reason why it or his prostate would be causing any pain while having a BM. The doctor will check his anal glands as well to make sure they are ok. Take in a fresh stool sample to make sure it is to too dry/firm and causing a problem. You may get some answers. my dog makes howling noises like he's in pain when he poops and you can clearly see blood in his anus but there is no blood in his stool. besides crying out in pain when he poops, his behaviour hasnt changed. should i be concerned or wait it out?
Your dog may have an injury in his anus or rectum, or a polyp or he may have an impacted anal gland. I strongly recommend you take him to your veterinarian as an impacted or infected anal gland is very painful and needs to be evacuated, or lanced and flushed. Please take Loki to a veterinarian ASAP.

I would take Star into a vet today or tomorrow. Blood in the stool isn't normal, and it could be caused by a number of things including intestinal worms, GI illness, eating something rotten, a foreign body, hemorrhagic gastroenteritis, tumors, GI ulcers, trauma to the GI tract, or anal sac rupture. Even though he looks fine, this still should be examined by a vet. I hope this helps!

Hi and thanks for using Boop by Petco! I recommend having Bandit's anal glands checked by a vet. Dogs have sacs inside their rectum that can become infected and cause pain when defecating. Having the glands checked will also ensure a rectal exam too. This may help narrow down the reason he is in pain. Please do not give any medications until you talk to a vet.
