Why is my dog's poop soft, frequent, mucusy, and bloody? What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 6 months old | 49 lbs

My dog had a bowel movement yesterday which started out firm then iy started coming out soft. He's had a few bowel movements since then, not watery. Today he's pooped about 5 times, first 2 soft. His 3rd bowel movement appeared to be getting hard but then the last 2 were mucusy and like blobs. The last movement had blood streaks. He is up to date on his shots and he's also a parvo survivor. Dog food still the same.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Chance. He should see his veterinarian given the blood in his stool. I typically use an antibiotic when this occurs to prevent bacteria from gaining access to the bloodstream. There are numerous causes for soft stool and diarrhea. He could be experiencing stress, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites or another infection or a condition known as hemorrhagic gastroenteritis. Other times the symptoms are treated and the underlying cause is not determined. It is generally safe to withhold food for 24 hours if he is otherwise acting normal. This will rest the GI tract and potentially resolve the diarrhea. Be sure to provide plenty of water so that he does not become dehydrated. I hope this information helps!
