What's the best antiseptic soap for my pet's wound? Is hydrogen peroxide safe?

You are welcome! I'd just use dawn dish soap, it's gentle on the skin. I would not use hydrogen peroxide, it can damage tissues and interrupt the healing process. You can see if your vet can give you some chlorhexadine to clean the area, or pick up a cat safe antiseptic soap from the pet store. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

I would not recommend hydrogen peroxide, you can use an antibiotic ointment and you will need an e-collar as well. bear in mind there might be a foreign body (usually a grass seed) buried in there which will need to be removed under sedation by your vet.

I would stop cleaning Moon Moon's sore with hydrogen peroxide. That's because it can actually damage tissues and interrupt the healing process. It is concerning that it's not healing, and the hydrogen peroxide could be part of the problem with it not healing. I would also refrain from putting Neosporin on it. Although quite safe on superficial wounds, cats groom and ingest most of the topical ointment you apply and therefore should be used only under direct veterinary supervision and if there are no other appropriate options. Many human ointments contain multiple other ingredients which are not necessarily safe to be swallowed. I think it would be a good idea to take her into the vet to have her wound examined. The vet can clean the cut, and may prescribe an antibiotic to help it heal if it's infected.

Is peroxide and antibiotic ointment allowed to be used on a cat for a small wound
Poor Jasper! You can use peroxide to clean the wound once but then you should not use it anymore as it will damage the new cells as it heals. You can also wash the wound with soap and water and make sure to rinse well. Jasper should wear an Elizabethan collar to make sure he does not lick the wound as this will make it worse. Pharmacy law does not allow online veterinarians to discuss using human medications for pets. I recommend to call your veterinarian and discuss this option. Also make sure to monitor very closely for worsening of the wound. Cats can get abscesses that generally need antibiotic therapy. Best of luck and please feel free to post any additional questions.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! I am afraid that it is not possible to accurately help you with this without being able to evaluate this lesion you describe. If this is superficial, you could try to use chlorhexidine pads topically. However, if this is a deep wound, that would not be recommended. I do not recommend spraying hydrogen peroxide. I recommend you have Sadie evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a good night!

Poor Salem! You can gently clean the area with warm water and antibacterial soap. Hydrogen peroxide can be quite irritating to the tissue and actually causes healing to take longer in many cases, so I don't recommend using this. Neosporin should not hurt anything if you want to try it, but most cats will groom off any topical medication like this that you use. If needed, you can place an e-collar (plastic cone) on Salem so that he cannot continue to lick at the wound and make it worse. If it does not seem to be improving in the next 2-3 days, it would be best to see a vet as he may need prescription antibiotics to treat the sore.

Dixie has a wound on her neck it appears to have some type of parasite inside it there are several openings and the main one that are seeping blood and infection I have been treating the wound with peroxide and covering it triple antibiotic ointment
I don’t appreciate any parasites from these photos but the only thing I could think of that would be in a wound like that would be maggots and typically they’re crawling on top and inside the tissue. This looks like a pretty extensive wound with a deep infection and I really think she should be on oral antibiotics as well as something a little bit stronger to use topically on the wound. Hydrogen peroxide is not indicated for this. Hydrogen peroxide will destroy not only the bad tissue but also the good tissue that’s trying to come in so, in essence it delays healing. so, whatever you do stop using hydrogen peroxide. I can understand trying to want to deal with this at home but I think she really needs to see your veterinarian at this point.

Hi there and thank you for using Boop by Petco to address your concern. From the pictures, it does not appear to be a major wound, just a superficial wound. For cleansing the wound, you can use a diluted solution of Betadine and Saline mixed together until you have a light brown solution. Use this to clean the area and to help decontaminate the wound. If the wound begins to develop signs of infection such as pus, swelling, etc., I would recommend having Slinky examined by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate treatment recommendations can be made. Poor Maisy! You don't have to keep washing the wound, you can use an antibacterial spray on it. You can get one from a pet store. If the wound appears infected (red, warmth to the touch, swelling, pus), then you will need to take her into the vet to get it treated. I hope this helps!

I am sorry to hear about your pup! Ideally we would use a chlorhexidine soap while being careful not to get it in the eye. You can purchase this at most drug stores under the trade name Hibiclens or the store may have a generic version. After cleaning you can apply a topical antibiotic ointment and monitor the area for increased bleeding, swelling, or yellow/green discharge which can be a sign of infection and veterinary care will be needed. If you discover the wound gets larger/appears to open up after cleaning then sutures (stitches) may be needed by the vet.

Thank you for using Boop by Petco. I recommend calling Zildjan’s veterinarian if the wound is not healing well. Be sure you are only cleaning as directed by her veterinarian. Some antiseptics or cleaners can inhibit healing. Do not use hydrogen peroxide to clean wounds daily.
