Why is my cat coughing, breathing hard, and sleeping more than usual?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hello there Just got back from a brief holiday and my 1.5 year old cat is not well. She occasionally makes a strange sound resembling a cough, but she constantly seems to have either a heavy and difficult breathing or stomach spasms. Vet found no fever, no stomach problems and put her on an antibiotic. This is not helping. I m very concerned She sleeps more than usual although she can be active at times Pls help

Hi and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I am sorry to hear your cat is doing well. Coughing and/or breathing difficulty can have a variety of causes- feline asthma, upper respiratory infection, and heart problems are all possibilities. I would recommend she gets a couple chest x-rays done to get a better view of her heart and lungs to help aide in a more definitive diagnosis. I hope this helps and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
