Why is my dog's pink belly and chest getting darker? Is it normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 2 years old | 14 lbs

My two-year-old chihuahua/Italian greyhound mix had a pink belly and chest when I adopted her November 10, 2017. She was gradually been developing darkening of her belly, chest and upper "arms". Is this normal? She is active and happy. I have never had a dog change colors under my watch and I have had 6 dogs over my lifetime.

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Leia is very cute! Form your picture the pigmentation and freckling on her belly and arm pit areas is normal. I have seen dogs develop increased freckling of the under sides as they age. It is normal as long as the dog isn't licking excessively. To me Leia looks normal. I wish you the best! https://www.petcoach.co/article/causes-of-pigment-color-changes-in-the-skin-coat-in-dogs/
