My pug puppy has a big belly button. Umbilical hernia? What to do?

Hi, I have a 5 months old female pug. She has an outer big belly button. I’m afraid it could be umbilical hernia. Could you please tell me what it is. And how to treat it. Thank you very much, Annie

Hi Annie! From your pictures, it does look like Coco has an umblical hernia, but I can't say for certain without seeing her in person. Luckily these are easily fixed when a dog is spayed, so when you make the appointment to have that done, the vet can discuss fixing it at the same time. It's never recommended to breed a dog with an umblical hernia because they are hereditary. Give your vet a call to make an appointment to have her spayed. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

Yes, it is important to have surgery done on this because if left untreated, it can be serious. A loop of intestine can become entrapped in this hernia, which will make the dog very sick. Puchku should have this fixed, and I would have it done when you have him neutered (if he isn't already neutered). Because umbilical hernias are hereditary, dogs with them should never be bred. Hello and thank you for contacting Boop by Petco. It does look like umbilical hernia. As long as it is not getting bigger, there is no danger for Gracie. Umbilical hernia rarely causes any problems to dogs, unless it is very large (it does not look large in Gracie). This hernia can be surgically repaired, it is usually done at the same time as neutering (during one surgery).

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Coco. It is common for umbilical hernias to go from reducible to non-reducible as the dog grows. I typically surgically repair it at the time of the spay. If you are not planning on spaying her, it still should be corrected. However, it is not an emergency as long as it not red, painful and she is not acting ill. Most of the time, it is just a bit of abdominal fat that slip through the opening in the abdominal wall (the hernia). The risk is if an internal organ such as a loop of intestine slips through the defect. In this case, the hernia would be painful to the touch and Coco would likely be vomiting and showing signs of pain. This is very rare though. I hope this information helps!

This does not look like a n umbilical hernia on the photos. You can easily check for a hernia by gently pressing on the "bubble" and if it disappears, it is a hernia. Very small hernias (less than a dime in diameter) do not always have to be repaired. If you cannot reduce the mass then it is likely just scar tissue from the umbilicus.

Hi, Congratulation on the new addition to the family! so what I suspect from the description and also suspect from the pics I would say the puppy may have an umbilical hernia which is a common condition. I would suggest to take the puppy to first puppy check with a vet to confirm, the vet typically diagnoses umbilical hernias easily upon feeling the protrusion. In most cases the vet will follow up and monitor it till the hernia is corrected at the time of castration around 6 mo of age. Bear in mind that these hernias indicates a genetic predisposition to the condition that can be passed on through generations so the dog not meant for breeding anyway please have him castrated as soon as suggested by your vet.

You are right to be concerned - all new lumps and bumps should be evaluated thoroughly! It is a little difficult to tell from the photo, but this lump is in the location of her umbilicus, and it is suspicious for an umbilical hernia. It could also be some other type of a mass, but the only way to know for sure is to have it evaluated by your vet. Your vet can determine whether or not it is a hernia and/or take a needle sample to determine the type of cells. If it is a hernia, they can usually be routinely fixed during her spay procedure.

Hello, I am due to buy a pug puppy friday and the breeder has just got in touch has he has been to the vets today who said 2 of the pups have a small umbilical hearnia but reassures me this will heal itself is this the case?
Hi there. Small umbilical hernias are common, and do not normally cause any significant problems. Sometimes they close over on their own, depending on their size, and sometimes not. The hernia can be fixed when the pup is spayed or neutered, if it is still present at that time. Large hernias that involve the intestines and other internal organs are much less common. If the veterinarian who examined the pups indicated that the hernia is not of any clinical concern, then you shouldn't need to worry.

Whether or not this hernia requires treatment will depend on the size. Umbilical hernias are not uncommon in puppies and most are not serious and do not require treatment if they are small in size. Larger hernias are more concerning, as in some cases intestines can protrude into the hernia which can become life threatening. If this hernia is at all painful/uncomfortable, or the puppy has decreased appetite then an exam is needed right away. Hello. I just bought a puppy and it has an umbilical hernia. Is this something that will have a large cost in tge future?
Congratulations on your new puppy! Umbilical hernias can cause issues depending on their size. A small hernia is not likely to cause issues, as the intestinal loops are less likely to come through whereas a larger hernia can cause decreased circulation to the intestines, and cause an issue. Typically, hernias which can be reduced, or do not always have a loop of intestine present in the defect, do not cause many issues. I recommend discussing this with your vet, who can assess the size of the hernia and make a better recommendation. If you plan on having your puppy spayed or neutered, the hernia can easily be repaired at that time. I hope this helps and am happy to answer any questions you may have!

This does look like an umbilical hernia, but I cannot say for sure without seeing Smokey in person. No, they do not go away on their own, they need to be repaired surgically. Have it checked out by a vet, and you can discuss having it fixed when you get him neutered. Dogs who have umbilical hernias should never be bred because it's a heritable condition. Best of luck.
