My dog has low WBC, vomiting, and is in critical condition. Advice?

Pet's info: Dog | Siberian Husky | Male | unneutered | 1 year old | 31 lbs

The vet advised me that Uno has low wbc, only 2.7 vs a normal of 6 from the blood sample they tested yesterday. She updated me this morning that Uno is still vomiting but he has not pooped overnight and his temperature is in normal range. She advised me that Uno needs to survive within 3-7 days and the vomiting needs to stop for her to say that Uno is getting better. He is still confined in the clinic with continuous medication. Your thoughts on this?

I'm very sorry Uno is so sick! Without seeing him in person, I can only give you my thoughts, but I agree with his vet. Stopping vomiting is one sign that he is getting better, so I can understand why his vet is making that statement. I also feel he is in the best place possible receiving treatment, and I would keep him there. Certainly I hope that he does get better! Best of luck.

The urination doesn't necessarily alarm me - I expect Winston is probably receiving a lot of fluids via an IV catheter, so he is likely producing a lot of urine and may have just really needed to urinate! However, I do worry that he's still vomiting despite his anti-nausea medication. The vet treating him will definitely be the best resource for input on his overall prognosis, since they have the full picture and can examine him in person. I think you're right to be concerned, but I wouldn't be giving up hope - some serious cases of pancreatitis just need several days of hospitalization before they start to turn around. You're doing the right thing by keeping him hospitalized at this point. Fingers crossed for your little guy! I hope this helps.

This may be a good case to choose a Boop by Petco Consult as there are a lot of variables we would need to know to help you the most. Causes for low white cells could be severe, overwhelming infection, viral, or even something like cancer. Many medications would take longer than 5 hours to see a positive response, but it varies based on the presumptive diagnosis your vet has made and the particular medication. Some medications can be dual purpose and treat pain. There are many diagnostics I would recommend based Kent he bit of information you gave us, like other tick testing, blood chemistry, urinalysis, x-rays, ultrasound, fecal testing, etc.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! I see on the bloodwork that Lumi has elevation of bilirubin. Also, the potassium, sodium and chloride are decreased which can be due to vomiting and not eating well. The elevated neutrophils (inflammatory cells) could be an indication of an infection, pancreatitis, among many other things. I highly recommend that you have him evaluated by an emergency veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Some of these conditions require hospitalization and supportive care and he may benefit from that. Also, further diagnostics such as an abdominal ultrasound could help determine if pancreatitis is likely or liver disease or something else seems more likely. Good luck and have a great day! Low white blood cells can be a sign of overwhelming infection, sepsis or cancer, and along with a fever I would be very concerned. I'm wondering if both chest x-rays and abdominal radiographs were performed, or if an ultrasound was performed because those might help determine what is causing these symptoms. I don't think there is much else you can do at home if you are unable to afford hospitalization, but you should definitely continue to recheck with your vet and if Aute seems to be taking a turn for the worse in any way you should have him rechecked immediately.

Hi there! Thanks for letting us take care of you today! When there is evidence of blood in the vomit, that raises concern for things like a gastrointestinal ulcer, gastrointestinal tumor, severe gastroenteritis, foreign body ingestion, among other possibilities. The fact that he has seemed weak afterwards is likely due to being dehydrated and possibly anemic though of course other things are possible.he should be evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible for further assessment and treatment as I am afraid he is becoming weaker. Some tests that are usually run include bloodwork (CBC and chemistry panel +/- coagulation profile) and abdominal ultrasound. Thoracic/cervical radiographs may follow. Further diagnostics will be based on the findings up to that point. Treatment will be based on findings. Keeping my fingers crossed that everything will be fine with Rambo!

Yes, it was the right decision, without taking him to the vet he would have zero chance to survive, now at least he stands a fighting chance. he is very young so overall i would say his chances are not very good, but you never know, with the correct treatment he might perk back up and survive this.

my golden retriever is 6 months old. he is vomiting since 3 days and also has diarrhoea. we did the blood report and his wbc and platelets count are very low. his platelets count in 13000. what is he having? what should i do?
Sorry that your puppy is sick. If he hasn't been tested for Parvo virus than he should be tested. He should be hosptialized and put on IV fluids and given medications to treat the vomiting/diarrhea and an antibiotic to prevent bacterial infections. Your vet could also test him for tick borne diseases which can cause decreased white blood cells, anemia, and/or decreased platelets. If his signs persist and your vet does not find the cause, you could ask for a referral to an internal medicine specialist for more advanced diagnostics and treatment. Hope he recovers quickly.

Your pet Tinku is in critical condition right now based on your description. Poor guy. A severe reaction to the medicaitons is possible or another internal unrelated illness. He needs bloodwork analysis and possible radiographs to diagnose the underlying problem so that we know how best to help his condition. There is unfortunately nothing you can do at home to help a pet that is this ill and unstable. He needs to be seen right away. His vitals sound good for now, but his extreme lethargy means that his cardiovascular system has been affected and this can progress quickly. I hope that your pet Tinku is able to see a vet right away to hopefully make a full recovery. Best wishes and take care.

My dog 6mnth old female, suddenly not eating anything, next day started vomiting and diarrhea of green mucus type. Its day 4 and condition is getting worse, vomiting bile and brown mucus type stool. below attached prescription note.
I can't really understand the handwriting on those notes but if he is not getting better with treatment then your vet needs to do additional diagnostics. Your vet could run blood work, fecal test, and take abdominal x-rays to help determine the cause of his persistent vomiting. He could have an infection, parasite, or an intestinal obstruction causing the vomiting. If your vet still can't diagnose and treat the problem then you could take him to a specialist for an abdominal ultrasound or an exploratory surgery could be performed to look for the cause. Hope she gets better soon!

Poor Lupo! I'm sorry to hear that he's sick. Unfortunately, the symptoms you describe are very concerning - repeated episodes of vomiting like this, especially with blood, are often a sign of a serious problem such as pancreatitis, an intestinal obstruction, a systemic illness like liver or kidney disease, or ingestion of something toxic. A curved back and acting very lethargic are signs of abdominal pain. I'm afraid this is not something that can be treated at home - he really needs to see a vet right away, as this may be a life-threatening problem. The vet can do blood work and x-rays to help determine what is causing the vomiting and get him started on appropriate treatment depending on what is found.
