My senior dog has thick, itchy eye discharge. What's the cause?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 16 years and 4 months old | 42 lbs

Julie is a 17 yr old border collie german shepard mix. female. Condition is only in one eye the left eye. She is fully up to date on all her shots...sees a vet regularly... her diet is Rachel Ray Purina grain free. Here symptons are mucus coming out of eye...thick and sometimes its heavy. have not noticed any smell. I think it itches her because she likes it when I rub her eye with a clean wet tissue.

It sounds like Juliet could have an eye infection. This is something that needs to be examined and treated by vet, as leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. Give your vet a call to make an appointment for her to be seen to have her eye treated. Best of luck.

I recommend cleaning this daily with a hot warm cloth to remove the discharge. Then when you have the area clean apply a thin film of antibacterial ointment on the area below the eyes. That will help heal the skin and stop the discharge from sticking to the skin and fur. I would have Babygurl's eyes checked by your veterinarian. This looks like she has dry eyes, which is a decrease in normal tear production. With this condition the eye discharge is thick and sticky like this. There is medication for dry eyes which will increase the tear production. So Fang is a dog I'm watching for a friend, hes around 13 years old and this afternoon I noticed some puss-like discharge coming from his eye (thick, whitish-yellow) and its concerning me. What would be the best course of action?
I see what you mean about the puss from Fang's eye! This is a sign of an eye infection, and he needs to see a vet for it. I'd give your friend a call to let them know the problem and that he should see a vet. Leaving this untreated can lead to vision loss, which is why it's important to make that appointment. My dog as green puss coming from her eye it as only started today She is on steroids called predicure, she is 12 years old and been sprayed. It's not bothering her
It sounds as Willow is suffering from an eye infection, it is relatively common in dogs. you will need to take her to the vet the first chance you get, the vet will check the eyes, if it is indeed a simple eye infection your vet will prescribe an antibiotic eye drops that will probably solve the problem in no time.

It sounds like he could have an eye infection or allergies. You could gently clean the discharge with a wet washcloth and then instill some artificial tears in his eyes, like GenTeal drops but he will need an antibiotic drop if he has an infection. Schedule an appointment with your vet for an examination.

My dog is constantly itching and now has white ooze coming from her left eye only. She is a 3 year old lab mix. She has been an itchy dog since she was about 1 year old. I feed her Rachel Ray dog food & add olive oil to it sometimes. I give her baths
It sounds like she has allergies and needs medications to control her itching. Have your vet take a look at her to determine the best medication for her. She may need an antihistamine, corticosteroid, or a new medication called Apoquel to help relieve the itch. She may also need eye medications to treat the discharge that she is having.

My dog has had weird eyes for a while. I think they itch/bother her, do you know what it is and If I need prescribed vet medicine from my local vet to take care of it? It really worries me. I don't want her to be uncomfortable or in pain
It is very important that Cutie be seen by a vet for proper diagnosis and treatment of her eyes. Over-the-counter medications are not recommended for use in treatment of eye disease without a vet’s recommendation, as some types of eye ointments and drops contain steroids that can severely damage the eye if it has a scratch/corneal ulcer. Her vet will need to evaluate her eye, and may recommend testing such as a Fluorescein stain to look for scratched/ulcers, tonometry to test the eye pressures and look for glaucoma, or a Schirmer tear test to evaluate tear production. In some cases a combination of causes can lead to an uncomfortable eye, and as you mentioned some eye conditions can be very painful. Sometimes if eyelashes/ hair are growing in a way that causes them to touch the eye it can lead to pain as well. Cutie looks to have quite large, bulging eyes, which predisposes her to conditions such as dry eye, and if you suspect she is in pain you are likely correct. Please book an appo

It sounds like your dog has an eye infection, and I would take him into a vet right away. Eye infections should be considered an emergency, as leaving them untreated can lead to vision loss. The vet can diagnose that he does have an eye infection, and can give him an antibiotic eye ointment to treat it.

Our 5 year old shephard has a reddish brown covering over both eyes and her eyes are watering with a thick substance.
Poor girl. This looks like she may have a conditon called pannus (ulcerative keratitis), which is an immune mediated condition of the eyes. I would highly recommend taking Mariah in to your local vet for a complete eye exam to have the eyes tested. If she does have this condition then medication can be prescribed to help her eyes normalize. Another possibility is an eye hemorrhage (bleeding) due to trauma, but an up close eye exam should be able to differentiate this. I hope everything works out well for your pet Mariah. Thanks for using Boop by Petco! This could be due to an eye injury or conditions such as a corneal laceration and/or corneal ulcer. At least in these pictures, his cornea appears affected.
