My dog has diarrhea after licking medicine. When should I go to ER?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Male | unneutered | 4 months and 23 days old | 32 lbs

My pup licked Animax off a wound this morning (6am) his stool was fairly soft this afternoon (4 pm) and he has woke up crying 2x to go outside with complete liquid diarrhea. (11:00pm and 12:30 am) I had him try to eat some food since his last time outside and drink water, at what point should I be concerned enough with his diarrhea to take him to er vet.

Poor Malachi! I can give you a home remedy to try to see if that helps him, and some warning signs as to when you need to rush him into an ER vet. Withhold food for 8 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, there is blood in his diarrhea, he starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. Best of luck, I hope this helps!
