My dog's poop is black and tar-like. Is it a serious health issue?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Schnauzer | Male | unneutered | 10 years and 5 months old | 11.4 lbs

My 10 year old schnauzer has been diagnosed with diabetes and is also on heart tablets and insulin. We have noticed over the weekend that his poop is black and tar like. Is that something that we should be worrying about.

Yes, black poo is always a concern as it means that there is a bleeding in the small intestine or stomach. The bleeding could be from infection, which is commonly seen in UK, but it could be a sign of stomach or gut ulcer or even a tumour in the gut. Please, take Alfie to your vet to check him over and to run bloods to see how concerning is the bleed.
