My cat came home with a limp tail and can't lift it. What's wrong?

Hi! my cat moochacho came home late tonight. His tail is limp and when I scratch his back, he does not lift his tail like he usually does. It seems as if he is trying hard to lift it... Any help?

It could be that Moochacho injured his back or tail while outside. I would keep him indoors tonight and do not let him outside in the morning. If his tail is still limp in the morning, give the vet a call and make an appointment for him to be seen that day. Do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to cats and are fatal if given. The vet can prescribe pain medications as needed, and treat the cause of the limp tail. Poor Kovu! If he is allowed outside, he could have injured his back or tail causing these problem. If he's not lifting his tail in the air, he is aggressive to you when you try to touch it, and he is not walking well, then yes he is in a lot of pain. He needs to see a vet now for this, as there isn't anything you can do at home for his pain. Many human pain medications are toxic to cats and are fatal if given, so the only safe pain meds are available at the vet. He should also have x-rays done on his back and tail to see what is causing his pain. Please take him into a vet now. I hope this helps!

I have an indoor outdoor cat that seems to been injured. I have noticed that his left hind leg, when he walks, he limps on it. He has no motion or activity with his tail as well. I need your advice.
Hi and thanks for using Boop by Petco! Sorry to hear about Mister. I would assume from what you are describing that one of two things has happened. Mister either got into a fight with another cat/some wildlife or he has suffered some other trauma such as hit by car/other. I would advise taking Mister to your veterinarian. They can get a detailed history and do a thorough examination of the affected areas. Typically with fights, the hind end is involved since one cat is often running away from the other cat or animal that is attacking it. Of course bite wounds and scratches can occur anywhere on the body. Your vet can then discuss a sound treatment plan which could involve sedation/anesthesia, clip/clean wounds, drain placement, antibiotics, rabies booster, pain medicines, anti inflammatory medicines, etc. If you are not sure what happened, your vet will most likely advise a rabies booster shot (if no fever) in case this was a wild animal such as a raccoon, skunk, etc. Good l

Your kitty likely either was hit by a car or got his tail caught under the wheel of a car and shot off severing the tail bones from the hip. Please take him to a veterinarian for some xrays and pain medicine and treatment as indicated by the clinical exam results.

Unfortunately many tail injuries suffer complications to the blood supply, monitor very closely for any loss of heat or the tail becoming stiff and also any difficulty urinating or defecating as nerves can be pulled and stretched. Rest will speed recovery and if he becomes painful he would need antiinflammatory medication prescribed by your vet

Market's tail is very red and looks infected. I would visit her vet asap as she will at the least need medication. Whilst there the vet can examine her and try to determine why her tail is limp. It could be neurological or could be due to the pain of this wound.

Poor Simba! If he isn't moving his tail and he meows when you touch it, I would be concerned that he has injured his tail, possibly even broken it. He could have also injured his back preventing him from moving his tail. I would keep him indoors tonight and take him into a vet first thing in the morning for a physical exam and x-rays. The vet can diagnose what is causing these symptoms so he can be treated. Likely he is hiding and not moving because he is in pain, which is why it's important to get him into the vet first thing in the morning. Please do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to cats and are fatal if given. The vet can prescribe pain medications as needed. Good luck, I hope this helps!

I suspect that Mishkey got attacked by another cat. Keep an eye on this area, if it isn't looking better in a few days, he should probably be rechecked by the vet. Sometimes that irritated skin will start to die and turn black, in which case it often needs to be removed surgically. Minimizing activity and giving pain medications as prescribed by the vet is the best you can do for him at this time. Make sure his food and water and litter pans are easily accessible.

This appears to be a classic presentation of a tail-pull injury. This happens when the tail gets pulled very forcefully (either it gets stuck under something like a car tire, or gets pulled by someone). This causes significant damage to the major nerves at the base of the tail, which is very painful and can cause paralysis of the tail. This requires that you take Kovu to a vet as soon as possible. It's not an emergency, but best if you go to a vet within 24 hours, because he will need pain medication and possibly other treatment. Your vet will be able to give you a better idea about the severity of the injury and prognosis. I hope that helps and Kovu gets better soon.

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor Momo! The most common reason for an outdoor cat to limp is from trauma. Either falling from something, get caught up or from fighting with another animal and suffering bite wounds and an abscess. I would keep him indoors and see if resting helps the limp, which it would if it was a strain or sprain. If he stops eating and is lethargic he may have a fever from bite wounds and infection. Bite wounds are treated with pain medications and antibiotics. These medications need to be prescribed by a Vet who can examine Momo. I hope this helps!

Hello. I am worried about my cats health, today he was outside and when he came back his tail was down for the first time in 7 months. When i touch it it seems like it hurts. Any idea what could have happened?
This usually happens when they have lower spine pain and/or had a tail-pull injury. Cats can get their tails caught in things (i.e. under tires, fences) and tend to struggle a lot, which can cause further injury to the muscles, ligaments and nerves. These types of injuries tend to heal well over a few weeks. You can apply ice to the area fro 15 minutes twice a day to help take down the inflammation. It's best to take Oberin to a veterinarian in order to get pain medication and an accurate diagnosis of the problem,. I hope that helps and Oberin gets better soon.
