My puppy has anal gland smell and scoots. What are the best remedies?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Cocker Spaniel | Female | spayed | 6 months and 22 days old | 13 lbs

Sophie is not even 7 months and has developed the anal gland smell. She dragged her tiny butt on the floor a few times already! Since I owned cocker over 12 yrs ago and expressed the gland myself after the vet showed me how...have they come out with any products or suggestions for this chronic problem?? No swelling, and I try to keep her little butt clean!

No I am afraid, the best strategy is to leave the anal glands alone unless they are impacted. You should feed some canned pumpkin with every meal which will make the stool more voluminous and so the anal sacs will get emptied every time she has a bowel movement. The more often anal sacs are manually expressed without an impaction, the more problems she will get over time. There is a colony of bacteria living in the anal sacs which cause part of the smell. If it gets too bad, then your vet can try to flush the anal sacs with an antibiotic which will kill those bacteria. However, after a while there will be a new colony and they may or may not smell.
