Why is my senior dog sick, having accidents, and sleeping a lot?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 50 lbs

Older dog, gets sick when she eats her food now and is starting to have accidents in the house. She sleeps lots. Still alert but you can tell something is off. She is a rescue so I dont know her age I would say between 12 and 16. Does this mean she is getting close to the end of her life.

Hi there! I'm sorry to hear that Emmy is having this problem. It certainly sounds like she's sick, but there's no way to know if this is an "end of life" problem or something treatable without a vet visit. I would recommend taking her in to the vet for an exam when you are able to. He/she can do blood work, x-rays, or other testing if needed to help diagnose the problem. Many common illnesses in older dogs, such a diabetes and chronic kidney disease, are treatable with medication so that affected dogs can have a good quality of life for a long time.
