Why is my dog's stomach bloated with gas and burps? What can I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | unneutered | 5 years and 9 months old | 62 lbs

Dog ate a huge qty of leftover soup in Jan. Had negative xrays & labs in Feb. Still occasionally seems like he's uncomfortable and does get a bloated stomach (passes gas & burps). Not vomiting, no diarrhea, is pooping normally. I think his stomach was damaged by the huge amount of soups in Jan (overextended). Vet wants to test for stomach cancer, but I can't afford it. Coat is still shiny & eyes are clear. He is just uncomfortable. What can I do?(he eats 4Health Sensitive stomach, chk & rice

There are many things that can cause similar GI signs and I would recommend feeding an ultra low fay, highly digestible diet such as royal canin gastro low fat or hills i/d low fat for 6 weeks to see if this helps improve his symptoms. The stomach and bowel lining can become damaged after such an extreme insult and poor digestion or food sensitivities can lead to discomfort after eating or low grade pancreatitis can give recurrent abdominal colic

It is unlikely that the previous food bloat could have damaged the stomach. The signs you are describing are unspecific and excess gas does not necessarily indicate any other than indigestion. you may want to try a course of antacids. I would would also recommend a consultation with an internal medicine specialist. You can find one on your area on www.acvim.org.
