My cat has diarrhea and vomiting but is still playful. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Simba, our cat, is 3 years old and started having diarrhea. It started off as very soft poop 4 days ago and has become more liquid since yesterday. He had a few instances of liquid poop coming out without him even knowing. He had 1-2 episodes of throwing up. His energy level is the same and playful, not lethargic. We’ve just been giving him water for the last 10 hours to clean out his system. He seems to be drinking water and hydrating well. Please advise, thank you.

I’m sorry you and Simba are dealing with this. Diarrhea in cats can be caused by several things including food changes, eating certain plants, animals or toxins outside , and parasites to name a few. I would have his veterinarian evaluate him. You may want to bring a sample of the diarrhea in with you to your appointment in case they want to check it for intestinal parasites. They will be able to help sort out with is causing his stomach and intestinal upset and can prescribe medication to help also if indicated. In the meantime, you can offer some vet bland food to see if that helps. An example would be Ferber or beechnut chicken baby food. I hope simba is feeling better very soon!
