My dog is shaking and hiding. What's wrong and should I worry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | 1 year and 11 months old | 10 lbs

Hey, Our Shih-tzu Maltese mix randomly started shaking and we're trying to figure out what's happening and the urgency. She literally went from nothing to shaking and hiding in her crate - and was just sitting on my girlfriend's lap. She hasn't eaten anything that we can think of that would have brought this on so we're trying to get a better idea. She's 2.

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. From your description, it sounds as if Chloe may be in pain or may be scared of something. Pain can be scary and uncomfortable for animals. If she is very active, she may have a neck or back injury. As long as she is not vomiting, lethargic or showing any other signs, I would monitor her for the next 12-24 hours. If she does not improve or the symptoms worsen, I would have her examined by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any further questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further. Please remember to rate this answer as helpful or not. Thank you!
