My dog's nail broke to the root, is bleeding, and he keeps licking it.

Pet's info: Dog | Great Dane | Male | neutered | 8 years and 4 months old

Hi, my friend's great dane caught one of its claws in the stairs and it broke to the root. It's been a few days and Ruben constantly licks it and it bleeds once in a while still. It actually looks like the outside part of the claw got removed and only the inside part is left, cause all his claws are grey and this one looks white underneath the blood... is it possible? What should we do? He always licks it but he doesn't limp at all. Thank you and have a good day!

Breaking toe nails is very common. It is painful and the lick it out of discomfort. The part of the nail left behind is the tissue part that contains the blood supply and nerves. Typically it is recommended to have it seen by a vet because he may need to be sedated to have to trimmed back so it can regrow properly and not be painful anymore.
