My dog is constipated and won't eat. Is Miralax safe for dogs?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Male | 14 years and 5 months old | 2.3 lbs

My 2.3 lb. poodle/Maltese had diarrhea week before last. I took him to the vet Monday (was out of the country last week) and they gave him medicine. By Wednesday, his stool had solidified, but now he hasn’t pooped since Tuesday! Today he won’t eat. He squats as if he’s going to go, but a few little pea-sized pellets come out. I called vet again and they recommended something like miralax for dogs. I couldn’t find anything like that at two pet stores, so I fed him (and he ate!) a couple

Miralax is a human product used as a stool softener. it can be found at any human grocery store or drug store. He would only need about an 1/8 teaspoon 2-3 times a week total to help regulate him. It is better to mix it in his food while humans mix it in water or a drink. Canned pumpkin or canned green beans also help with constipation at home if he will eat that Depending on what medications is currently taken, some may need to be adjusted or stopped since this may part of the reason he is no constipated.
