My old dog's eye looks funny. Is it conjunctivitis or a cataract?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 20 years and 3 months old | 40 lbs

My dogs eye started looking a little funny a few days ago but I shrugged it off thinking she just hadn’t fully woken up from her nap yet. Earlier today I took a closer look and it looks really bad. She’s old and already has trouble seeing and I’m scared it may be a cataract. I can’t afford a vet so if anyone knows what I can do to treat it or what it is I would be greatful. I’ll attach pictures of both eyes for comparison. The eye I’m worried about is the left one.

That is likely to be due to a mild to moderate conjunctivitis, probably secondary to a trauma or infection. A check up would be needed as appropriate treatment would include antibiotics and anti-inflammatory eye drops. Corneal injuries must be ruled out as well.
