Why is my friendly dog suddenly aggressive after recent neutering?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Great Dane | Male | neutered | 1 year old | 130 lbs

Lincoln today has suddenly become aggressive towards my sisters friend (biting), trying to attack my cat, and trying to bite my sister. He had gotten neutered a few weeks ago for being aggressive and not obeying. He was bred to be a therapy dog so I don’t know or understand why all the sudden he is acting like this, as he is a normally very friendly loving dog. Him and my other dogs have been killing/playing with opossums recently and I didn’t know if that had any kind of relation.

There could be many contributory factors to this behavior, he is just reaching the age of puberty, packs of dogs hunting often become heightened and the loss of testosterone following castration can occasionally cause a worsening of aggressive behavior as testosterone is mood balancing. I strongly recommend restricting all dogs from hunting as an independent pack and starting some obedience classes with Lincoln. Consider natural calming aids such as zylkene and pheromone products
