Dog threw up after tramadol powder by syringe. Was it a side effect?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | English Springer Spaniel | Female | spayed | 14 years and 3 months old | 28 lbs

I am going crazy with worry. My 14 year old springer was euthanized last fridayas it was her time. She had bad arthritis and lost so much weight & muscles in her back legs. She stopped eating and she wouldnt take her tramadol.my partner cut the capsules open of 100mg and squirted them to the back of her throat. She started wretching through the night and the next day. Then due to not eating she got so weak &couldn't stand. Was it wrong to give the tramadol powder by syringe. Ive been so worried

First off, I'm very sorry you recently lost Millie! Please accept my condolences for your loss, it's not ever easy even if it was the dog's time to go. As for your question, Vomiting is a side effect of the tramadol, and giving her the powder by syringe could have caused that side effect. While it wasn't the best idea to open up the capsules and give her the powder by syringe, it sounds like to me that she was doing poorly and letting her pass away was inevitable. Instead of beating yourself up over it, grieve for the loss of your beloved dog and try to remember the good times you had with her. Again, I'm so sorry for your loss!
