Why is my cat throwing up gray bile, not eating, and sluggish?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Male | neutered | 7 lbs

Mel has been throwing up this gray sludge and bile about twice a week for about a month now. He's on Hills Science D/D, which he usually gobbles up, but now food just hangs out in his bowl. His water intake has increased some. His litterbox habits are normal. But he is also getting very sluggish. He hasn't gotten into anything he shouldn't . What could this be and what can I do as home care etc?

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It sounds like Mel is having chronic vomiting, increased thirst, but decreased appetite. Unfortunately, these signs are rather vague, and can be caused by a number of conditions including hair balls, intestinal parasites, inappropriate diet, and other more serious conditions such as certain cancers. I recommend having Mel seen by his vet to determine exactly what is going on. You can try feeding a bland diet at home, making sure he gets plenty of water, and grooming Mel to limit hair balls. I hope all is well!
