My kitten's anus is red, swollen, and sticking out. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 2 months old | 7 lbs

I have a kitten less than 6 months old. She has always done great, no problems. Tonight I came home and she was lying down very quiet, when I looked closer I saw her anus was bright red swollen and sticking out. What is going on? I foster kittens, could they have given her some kind of parasite? She is fully vaccinated. Do I need to take her to an emergency clinic?

This looks very severe, probably an extensive anal prolapse, you must take her to the vet right away to get treatment, she will need to be put under anesthesia and have a procedure done to suture around the anal opening to prevent the anus from prolapsing.
