Why is my senior cat not eating, gagging, and low on energy?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

my cat is not eating, he smells the food and you can tell he is hungry but gags when he smells food. he also hunts outside and usually eats the cat food. Recently he hasn't been eating and is low on energy. Has been sleeping a lot more. Recently his condition seems to have worsened when he is resting he just sits on his paws and it looks like he is uncomfortable. He is at least ten years old.

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The signs you are describing are definitely cause for concern. These can be related to organ failure, infections. and certain cancers. I recommend having your cat seen by a vet as soon as possible to determine what is going on and begin treatment. I hope all is well!
