My senior dog is lethargic and won't lift her head. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 9 years and 6 months old

My dog won't lift her head, and is very lethargic. She doesn't seem to be in pain, and has been in the garden for a wee etc, and ate her 2 treats when she came in. She is a Patterdale/Jack Russel cross, and is 10yrs old in October. She is a healthy dog otherwise, haven't had to take her to vets since she was 2yrs old.

Poor Molly! It certainly seems like she has something going on. I would recommend taking her in for an exam by a veterinarian. She is considered geriatric, so blood work would be a great start. Some dogs are very good at hiding pain, a good vet exam can make sure there is no pain. After the exam- the veterinarian will determine a treatment plan for her. It could be something simple like a blocked anal gland or something more complex. Thanks for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
