My dog bit my grandchild. Should I rehome or try Petco training?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 12 lbs

We got a poodle shitzue mix last week he is said to be 1*2 years well socialized, seemed sweet but last night he bit my 7 year old granddaughter. Should we get rid of him? Or shouldl we take him to petco classes would that help?

That is a tough situation! It is concerning that Harley bit your granddaughter, and for her safety, yes it may be best to find him another home where children do not live or visit. If you want to try to keep him, get him into a professional behavioral expert right away. I never recommend owners work with aggressive dogs on their own due to the safety risks. You can work with the expert to see if he is a dog that can be kept or if finding him another home is best. Until you make the decision, keep him completely locked up and away from your granddaughter whenever she visits. Best of luck.

I would have Harley seen by a professional behavioral expert. Aggressive dogs can be very difficult and dangerous to work with, and I never recommend owners take their training upon themselves. There's too much of a risk the owner could be hurt, especially with a dog as large as him. The trainer can work with you and Harley on his aggressive behaviors. I would speak to your vet about a referral to a behavioral expert.

I agree with the decision to take him back to the SPCA. There are two things you can do with a situation like this. 1. Hire a trainer. Have them work with you, your kids and Bear to try to fix the situation. Sometimes this works and sometimes it does not. My concern with this is now your daughter will be cautious around him. She may never develop the relationship you would want with him because of this episode. 2. Take him back to the SPCA. There is nothing wrong with this. Know that not all dogs are good for all families. They have plenty of dogs and there are plenty of other rescues in your area that have amazing dogs. I do not like the fact that Bear growled or that he is nippy. As a Shepherd/Lab mix they get to be big and he will be a lot stronger later in life. Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Chewbacca is super cute! Biting children especially in the face is very serious. Chewbacca should not be in a home with young children. Biting in the face is unacceptable in any breed of dog. I recommend seeing a Veterinary Behaviorist for the best possible outcome. They can provide you and prognosis for his ability to be around children. Sadly it is likely best for him to be re-homed with someone with out children. I am not convinced that stress of moving has anything to do with the bite. I would at a minimum discuss this with your Vet at an appointment and consider behavior modifying drugs. In the meantime Chewbaca should be kept in a separate room from kids. I am sorry! I hope this helps and I wish you the best of luck!

Hi there! With any dog that is biting, there is the potential for them to really harm someone, or even another dog. The advice I always give is to contact your local veterinarian for a referral to a veterinary behaviorist ( a veterinarian who specializes in behavior). If this is not an option in your area, then your vet should be able to give you some recommendations for reputable trainers in your area. Working with a professional is the safest and best recommendation I can give. It is never a good idea to let a behavioral issue like biting go on for too long. And your friend should definitely make sure this dog has a rabies vaccine. There are many legal issues that can arise if this dog bites another person and breaks the skin. It could be your dog is protective/possessive of you our other what he deems rewards/valued items. When it comes to dogs and aggression, it can be a very long and difficult process with stripped and consistent training. I strongly recommend consulting a veterinary behaviorist as well as understanding once a dog bites it is at a greater risk for future bites compared other dogs. In the meantime you should keep your dog away from all children especially unsupervised. But your best option is to do one on one training for this behavior. Also understand there's a certain degree of liability of handling/owning a dog that has known aggressive tendencies and some insurance policies won't cover dog bite damages.

I hate to hear this is happening. If you do not want to rehome her, I recommend to work with a professional trainer because this will give you the best results the fastest. Canine aggression is a complex behavior as it can stem from dominance, possessiveness, fear, anxiety, resource guarding or a combination. Most people are not familiar with reading canine body language and training. A professional trainer is fully capable of reading the body language and then teaching you how to modify this behavior. Researching on your own will also be helpful. Familiarizing yourself with canine body language and dog training can help you to recognize what your pet is trying to say. You can find many books written on the topic and there is a trainer named Victoria Stilwell who I think is particularly helpful. Best of luck.

It is important to first see a veterinarian to rule out medical causes, and to see if medical therapy is indicated for Charlie’s behaviour if she has bitten people before. It is also very important to seek the advice of a dog trainer who uses positive reinforcement techniques, or a veterinary behaviorist, to help curb this behavior. Without training Charlie may indeed cause seruious harm to your boyfriend’s niece or other children. Hopefully she will improve with training and learn what is and is not acceptable behaviour. I would advise keeping her away from children until you have the chance to work with a trainer or behaviourist, and as with any dog, do not leave her unattended around children even after training. It does sound like from your descriptions that Graham is starting to act a little aggressive, and I would take him into a professional behavioral expert as soon as possible for training. I never recommend owners try to train aggressive dogs themselves because it can be dangerous, so it's best left to a professional. Aggressive behavior can escalate, and it can continue to be a problem. Without seeing his behaviors in person, I can't say for sure if your kids are safe around him, but I would not leave him unsupervised with them just to be cautious. I would speak to your vet first thing in the morning about a referral to a behavioral expert.

The first thing you need to ask yourself here is whether or not you believe the bite to you occurred intentionally, or accidentally while you were trying to separate the two dogs. If it is the former, keeping a dog within your home that you only just adopted that is already ready inflict harm to you is going to be difficult if you don't have a ton of experience with dog behavior and training. While I love pit bulls (I have three), I readily understand that they are large, powerful dogs that can do some serious damage. If you live alone, or if you have children, my recommendation would be to relinquish the dog unfortunately, If the latter is what happened, there may be opportunities for addressing the issue. I would keep the dogs separated for at least the next 24 hours and let things cool off. I do not blame you for being very concerned, and I'm sorry for your daughter's injury. Because you cannot teach an eighteen-month-old how to respond to the puppy in such a way as to minimize the possibility of another incident, there is a reason to believe it could happen again. I would return the puppy to the breeder if you can, explaining the reason why. Perhaps Buzz is just not suitable for a home with small children. There is such a thing as temperament testing, which can be done through your local kennel club. Though not foolproof, this can give you some idea how a puppy will react in a variety of circumstances. This may not be the breed mix for you, or it may be that you simply need to go to another source for your puppy.
