My 7-week-old kitten has eye discharge. Is it serious or an infection?

Our 7 week old kitten has tow eyes with discharge. Thought it was scratched but not sure now. His brother had a scratched eye but it's healed now. Is this serious or something that will clear up?

Any eye problem is considered serious because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. It's possible that Shy does have a scratch on his eye, that can often only be visualized with a fluorescein stain. It could also be that he has an eye infection. I recommend taking him into the vet first thing in the morning. The vet can diagnose what is causing the discharge from his eye, and can prescribe a treatment for it. Your kitten possibly has a little infection. I would carefully wipe off the discharge and observe the eye. If he keeps squinting or has more of that yellow discharge, and / or sneezes then you should have him examined by your vet. It also may be a good idea to have him vaccinated and wormed.

This kitten is suffering from an eye infection, it's very common in stray kittens and many of them lose their eyes to this disease if left untreated. fortunately the treatment is quite simple, take him to the vet ASAP and your vet will prescribe antibiotic eye ointment for him, this will solve the problem within a couple weeks.

This is my neighbor’s outdoor feral kitten, Sprinkles. I TNR’d him a few weeks ago. My neighbor and I are concerned about his eye infection which she noticed last weekend. My neighbor purchased Terramycin to apply but, Sprinkles is not easy to pickup
I agree that Sprinkles' right eye appears to have a good bit of discharge and squinting. While it's possible that this issue could be caused by an infection, I would expect both eyes to be affected. When only one eye squints, I worry more about corneal ulcers or abrasions. The only way to know for sure is to take Sprinkles to a vet for a physical exam, including eye evaluation. Since Sprinkles is feral, this process is likely to be more challenging, so you may want to ask your vet if they can prescribe a mild oral sedative like gabapentin to be given before the appointment. Depending on what is found, Sprinkles will likely need to receive eye medication at least twice per day, so he may need to be kept inside or in a safe, confined area until this issue has resolved. Eye issues can change and progress rapidly, so it's best to have him evaluated as soon as possible. Until then, keep him confined and try to put an e-collar (cone) on him if at all possible to prevent any rubbing or scrat

Cats often are infected with herpesvirus as kittens, and it can come and go throughout their lives, but often it flares up during times of stress (such as adding a new kitten). They can also get secondary bacterial infections in the eyes and upper respiratory infections. If it's not improving on its own or he starts squinting or pawing at his eye he may need antibiotic drops from your vet.

It sounds like Squeak could have an eye infection. The eye is such a delicate and important structure that any problem with it should be considered an emergency. That's because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. You need to take her into a vet immediately to have her eye examined and diagnosed so it can be treated as needed. I hope this helps!

Thank you for providing a picture of the kitten! It looks like he could have an eye infection or may have injured his eye. He will need to see a vet immediately for this, this is not something that can be treated at home. The eye is such a delicate and important structure that any problem with it should be considered an emergency. That's because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. I’ve had a kitten snuck into my house, and it took me an hour to catch him. His currently inside of a box with food and water, but his left eye is hurt. I’m unsure what to do at this point.
This is probably an upper respiratory infection. it's very common in young cats and is very contagious to other cats as well. It is treated with antibiotic eye drops/ointment and oral antibiotics for about 2 weeks. if left untreated many cats will end up blind or even die from the disease. I advise going to your vet asap to start the treatment right away.

It is very important that Chowder be seen by a vet for proper diagnosis and treatment of his eye to determine if this is an infection, if it is due to allergies or trauma, if it is a corneal ulcer( a scratch on the eye), or another condition that may need to be treated in a completely different manner.Kittens and young cats are prone to infections that can cause the symptoms you are describing. These are often viral, but can be mixed with bacterial infections as well, and can lead to the third eyelid protruding, which is what it looks like is happening in the pictures. Over-the-counter medications are not recommended for use in treatment without a vet visit, as some types of eye ointments and drops contain steroids that can severely damage an eye that has sustained a corneal ulcer or trauma. His vet will need to evaluate his eye, and a Fluorescein stain to check for scratches, tonometry to test the eye pressures, and a Schirmer tear test to evaluate tear production may be needed, based

It's probably either an eye injury or an eye infection, you need to take her to the vet so they can check the eye under a special light and staining, then she will probably need prescription antibiotic eye drops for 1-2 weeks if it's nothing serious.

My cat is keepimg one eye closed most of the time, there is a little bit of cloudy discharge it gets teary too but its not red or inflamed, she still eats fine and plays fine. What could this be?
This could be due to a scratch on the eye and/or an infection. The possible infection can be on the outside, or inside of the eye. There are also some eyelid disorders that can cause damage to the eye. Without seeing it, I can't narrow it down more than this. However, the cloudy discharge is concerning enough that it's best to take Shasta to a vet within the next 24 hours. Infections and other problems can quickly cause irreversible damage to the eye, so it's best to have it diagnosed and treated as soon as possible. For now, you can flush the eye 3-4 times a day with saline (can get this at the pharmacy or supermarket in the eye care section) to help clean and soothe it.
