My dog has a swollen, painless lump but is acting normal. What now?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | spayed | 1 year and 6 months old | 8.2 lbs

My dog has a lump that has gotten more swollen and puffy over the past few days but she doesn’t even act like it’s there it hasn’t affected her at all and she still goes about her business. I can push on it and she isn’t hurt and shows no signs of pain or unpleasantness. She’s a chihuahua about 8.2 pounds and just got her rabies shot, distemper, parvovirus, and influenza shot about a week ago and she still eats and drinks fine and runs around and she is almost 2 yrs old.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could be a benign or malignant growth. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. Good luck and have a good day!
