How to potty train 3-month-old puppies with a varied schedule?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Siberian Husky | Female | unspayed | 2 months and 9 days old | 15 lbs

I am struggling with potty training my two newest pups. They’re almost 3 months now and I feel like I haven’t gotten anywhere with it. I work a varied schedule of 6am - 3pm and 1pm - 10pm so it’s hard to get the pups on a schedule. I live in an area of very unpredictable weather so I don’t want to leave them outside. I work 4 hours before getting a lunch so having them in a crate that long would feel unfair. I’m not sure if puppy pads will work because they literally shred anything they touch.

They’re very cute! They are old enough to spend four hours in a crate. I would use a plastic crate, one for each of them, with no bedding if they chew it up. Take them out immediately before you leave and as soon as you get home. Praise them and give a treat when they potty outside. Always take them to the same place to go and teach them a command like ‘go potty’ so they will learn to go right away when outside in that spot. Three months is too young to expect them to be fully trained. Usually it takes until four to six months for them to have enough control to wait longer than four or five hours. When you are home watch them closely and take them out often so they don’t have a change to have accidents. Be patient they will improve with consistency and as they grow up.
