My puppy is thin, ribs showing, and losing hair. What can I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | unspayed | 6.6 lbs

I feed my puppy 4 times a day,but it still seems to be very thin with her ribs being visible and now hair fall has started with bald spots in area surrounding her eyes and mouth. I don't take her out much as she is still small, neither has she ever had contact with other dogs. The vet I go to hasld given deworming fluid first and then when it didn't work he gave capsules which also doesn't seem to work. She is active and doesn't show any kind of depression. What to do?

Have Bella rechecked by your veterinarian. The hair loss and balding may be due to parasites (fleas or mites) or possibly infection (bacterial or fungal). It may also be a nutritional deficiency. If she is scratching or rubbing excessively, place an e-collar (cone) on her until she stops. Feed a high quality puppy food. There are many available including Orijen, Acana, Canidae or Royal Canin. Avoid store or discount brands as these contain low quality ingredients and fillers. You can increase the amount fed at each meal until her weight is more in line with her age and development. While at the veterinary clinic, have the doctor show you how to assess Bella's body condition score (BCS). The BCS along with her actual weight will help you tailor her diet so she is getting enough food but not becoming obese.
