My dog won't stop licking a raw spot. When should I call the vet?

I'd be worried in that Harley keeps licking it, which shows it's bothering him. From your picture, it looks like he has licked that area raw in a spot, so I would definitely have this checked out by the vet. Give the vet a call today or tomorrow to make an appointment for him. Until you can have him seen, put an Ecollar on him to keep him from licking at it. You can get one at a pet store, or I can put a link below on how to make one at home. Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco with your question about Buddy and for providing pictures, they are very helpful. I would be worried about it, it's obviously bothering him and the licking will be making it worse. Without seeing him in person, I can't say what is causing it. I do think he needs to see a vet for it. The vet can diagnose what it causing it and can treat it. I would take him into the vet in the morning. I hope this helps!

Dogs often get these hot spots (aka acral lick granulomas) for a few different reasons, but it seems like this may be due to allergies. Harley may be over-licking the area because it's sore, or it has an infection. In fact, these types of lesions tend to develop infections in the skin despite the cause. It could also be somewhat of a habit she developed. I think it's best to consult with your vet about this, because they will know more about her case and can ensure that she gets the necessary treatment. You can also do a few things at home to help treat for infection and keep her from licking too much. Here are my recommendations: 1) Clip the hair around the area and expose all of the sore skin. 2) Wash/spray the area with just cool, clean water (no soap or other antiseptics) for at least 5 minutes at a time. Do this at least twice a day. 3) Bandage the wound with gauze and apply an over-the-counter antibacterial cream (i.e Neosporin) to the wound. Keeping it covered and

My dog won't stop licking and it's becoming red do you know what's wrong? It's raw from licking. The photos keep coming out different on here. She got a bath a few days ago gonna give her another mabye luke warm water will sooth it.
Hello. It is difficult to tell exactly where & what is going on, but the first thing I would recommend is to place an Elizabethan collar on Gemma to prevent her from reaching the area. I think bathing her in some lukewarm water is an excellent idea, you might want to add a handful of Epsom salts to the water, too. After rinsing, gently clean the area with a skin antiseptic such as Hibiclens ( available at all pharmacies ) & dab dry ( do not rinse off ). But the important thing is to prevent her from continuing to annoy the skin, so get that collar on her soo. You can buy these at any pet retailer or Tractor Supply. If the area is not healing within a few days, please see your veterinarian about this. Thanks for using Boop by Petco.

Ouch! That does look like a bit of a sore spot. If you have an appointment already scheduled, I would just place an Elizabethan (cone) collar on Bentley to prevent him from continuing to lick the food as licking it can make the spot worse and introduce bacteria/cause an infection in an already inflamed wound. Keeping the sore spot clean and dry with the use of a washcloth is also a good idea until your appointment. If you do see any rapid changes in size, it starts oozing debris badly, or it is painful enough that Bentley can't walk on it, then trying to get in for an appointment sooner is best.

Could this be a hot spot? Riley has been licking it like crazy. I got hydrocortisone lotion from pet store and am using it but he I still licking. It is getting a little bigger but not an open sore yet. This picture was taken yesterday morning.
This doesn't look like a typical hot spot but the area is clearly bothering Riley. Be careful with the hydrocortisone cream. He may be licking it off, and the ingredients are not safe for him to ingest. I'd have him seen by a vet for this problem.

If Cal constantly chews on it it may be that the licking and chewing is behaviorally based rather than injury based. Having the area checked by your vet is a good option, however, to rule out any possible causes such as an underling infection or allergy. It is also a good idea to not allow Cal to continue licking and chewing on the spot and to use an Elizabethan (cone) collar until the area is completely healed. Allowing him to lick and chew on it will just prolong the healing period and the saliva may introduce a secondary infection into the area.

I noticed this on my pup the other day he keeps wantingto lick it, to me it looks like a burn amd he has been around campfire lately but i dont recall him getting burned at all.
Hello, thank you for your question. Based on the photo you've attached it is possible that your dog could have a skin infection or may have traumatized that area. I would recommend discouraging him from licking at this area can predispose to development of infection. If this area does not heal or develops any colored/odorous discharge I would recommend having your dog seen by a veterinarian so that the area can be examined. Your veterinarian may recommend further skin testing depending on their assessment of the lesion. Hope this helps, good luck!

He might have been bitten or injured himself. I don't think this requires an ER vet visit, but keep an eye on him. In case he did get bit by something, if you see hives, swelling of the face and muzzle, or difficulty breathing, have him seen by an ER vet right away. Otherwise, take him into the vet in the morning. Put an Ecollar on him tonight to keep him from biting at it. I will put a link below on how to make one at home.
