My puppy has diarrhea and is lethargic. Is it time for a vet visit?

My 7 month old pitbull puppy has had runny stools for about 24 hours now. About 12 hours ago I started feeding him rice and boiled chicken breast in place of his food. For the last 4 hours or so he’s been laying around and hasn’t been acting like himself, what could be wrong with him?

There could be a couple of things wrong with Tank. It could be that he is suffering from a GI illness, may have eaten something rotten, could have intestinal worms, or could have a foreign body causing the diarrhea. It is concerning that he's acting lethargic, and given that he has now diarrhea for 24 hours and the bland diet isn't working (the lethargy shows he's not feeling better), I would say it's time for a vet visit. Give your vet a call first thing in the morning to get him seen. Best of luck.

It always concerns me when young puppies get lethargic. Puppies are more susceptible to the effects of dehydration and hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) than adult dogs, so diarrhea is more serious for Wallace than it would be for an adult dog. If he's back to acting normally, eating, drinking, and doesn't have further diarrhea or vomiting, it's perfectly fine to continue monitoring him at home. However, if he remains lethargic, has more mucousy diarrhea, begins to vomit, or refuses to eat or drink normal amounts, then you should have him examined by his vet. Your vet will need to do a physical exam. Depending on their suspicions based on their exam findings, they may recommend some diagnostic testing or may opt to start him on some medications. Possible causes of this type of issue include stomach upset from a virus, intestinal parasites, among many other issues. If your vet finds that Wallace is dehydrated, they'll also be able to give him some fluids. I hope that he feels better soon!

These signs could be compatible with an inflammation infection of the gastrointestinal system and surrounding organs (like pancreas and liver). A clinical examination at your local veterinarian is immediately essential to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately. A sudden change in diet can lead to these GI symptoms, but so can an illness. It's quite serious that she's now not eating, is lethargic, and won't eat the bland diet. I think she is sick enough to require a vet visit immediately. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website.

My three month old puppy has had red in her diarrhea and has been lethargic, I don't know what the cause could be, she's still eating and drinking and no weight loss.
She could have a parasite, infection, or some colitis from something she ate. It is a little concerning that she is lethargic. Take a stool sample to your vet and have it tested for parasites. She may need to be dewormed. You could also offer her a bland diet, like boiled chicken and white rice and see if that helps. If her signs persist or worsen then she needs to be examined by a vet to determine the cause.

Your pup is so cute, but I'm sorry that he isn't doing well! There could be a number of things causing his symptoms such as parvovirus if he isn't fully vaccinated, GI illness, eating something rotten, a foreign body, or pancreatitis among others. Given that he has been vomiting and has been lethargic since Sunday and isn't getting better, I'd recommend a vet visit for him right away. The vet can diagnose what is causing his symptoms, and can treat him for it. Please take him into a vet now.

Hi. Diarrhea can be caused bybalot of things. It is good that she is feeling well and acting normal. I would suspect something she ate, or possibly a common puppy parasite. I would call your veterinarian tomorrow to bring in a fecal sample and to start on some diarrhea medications. I would also feed a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice for 2 to 3 days. Good luck

I would recommend that Jack get checked out by a vet as soon as possible. If he can't keep down fluids he will become dehydrated very quickly. He may have stopped eating while you are gone because he missed you, but it might have also been a coincidence in timing and that is just when he started showing signs of illness. Vomiting and lethargy in a puppy can be caused by dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, GI blockage, gastroenteritis, bacterial or viral infection (such as parvo virus), among others. After a thorough medical exam and questions on his vaccination history, the vet may recommend diagnostics such as bloodwork, parvo testing, or x-rays to see what could be causing his illness.

Poor puppy. He is so sick. Because it has been more than 24 hrs with this pup, I would highly recommend taking him to your vet to be seen. He most likely has a serious illness that requires prescription medications and supportive care through the vet. I would have him seen today if possible. Until you can get him in, offer him some non-flavored Pedialyte diluted 50:50 with water to help keep him hydrated. Dehydration is the biggest concern with puppies at this age who are ill. I do hope that your fur baby Tiger feels better soon! Best wishes and take care.

Vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy are very concerning in puppies as they may be a sign of a potentially life threatening infection - parvovirus. Other conditions such as intestinal parasites, toxin ingestion, foreign body obstruction, or intestinal torsion can cause these signs as well and all require veterinary attention. Puppies can become dehydrated very quickly, and Chewy may need supportive care. I recommend that he is seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible, preferably within the next several hours. I hope this helps and that Chewy starts feeling better soon!

My 6 week old pitbull puppy is having diarrhea that is projectile. The vet gave me medicine for it but I'm still worried. It's light brown and super runny. She still drinks lots of water and still eats food
Depending on the cause of the diarrhea it could take 24-48 hours for diarrhea to improve. I would recommend contacting your veterinarian when you are able to see if this is expected or if Dallas needs to be rechecked. If she begins vomiting, seems very lethargic, or if you see blood in the diarrhea you should see an emergency veterinarian right away.
