My older cat keeps sneezing with yellow discharge. What can I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 16 years and 3 months old | 10 lbs

My older cat (solid black with long hair, named Hairy) has been sneezing for almost 2 months with yellowish nasal discharge. The vet checked him out and said his chest sounded fine. He eats well and cleans himself as usual. I've been giving him Vitamin C and L-Lysine throughout, sometimes taking him into a steamy bathroom. His sneezing has lessened but with a big sneeze, there's still discharge He is in great health otherwise. Is there anything else I can do for him??

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Hairy. It is not normal for a cat to sneeze and have nasal discharge for so long. Has he had a course of antibiotics yet? A bad respiratory tract infection can cause these symptoms and some will require extended treatment with antibiotics. If this does not help, then I would consider advanced dental disease. An infection around the root of a tooth can cause these symptoms as well. Lastly, cats can come down with fungal infections in the nasal cavity. I hope this information helps!
