Why isn't my pregnant dog's belly getting bigger? Is it normal?

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Female | unspayed | 11 months and 13 days old | 60 lbs

My pitbull will be 12 months next month. She conceived March 3rd. Her stomach is not as big as its suppose to be, but her nipples are hanging and filling. She's definitely having all the symptoms of pregnancy. She was 10 months when she got pregnant.

Each dog carries a pregnancy differently, and some dogs will have larger stomachs that others. There is no specific size a pregnant dog's belly should be, so as long as Snow is eating and drinking, isn't losing weight, and isn't very lethargic, I wouldn't be concerned about the size of her belly. I'm not sure if you have had her seen by a vet to confirm her pregnancy, but I do recommend having her seen by a vet if you have not. Best of luck!

Just like humans, some dogs don't get as big as others when they are pregnant - often, this has to do with how many puppies are present and how large they are. So yes, she could still be pregnant even if her belly doesn't look big. If you want to know for sure, you can take her to the vet for x-rays or an ultrasound to see if any puppies are present.

My dog 64 days ptegnant some days her stomach looks smaller is this normal please x
Hello and welcome to Boop by Petco. 64 days is very close to when she should be giving birth. Often dogs will look bigger or smaller based on if they have just eaten, and what position they are lying in, so I wouldn't worry too much about how 'big she looks'. I would make sure you are feeding her a good high-quality puppy food, canned food is best to make sure she has good water intake. Also, make sure she has a nesting area where she can go when she whelps (gives birth). If she seems to be straining and unable to pass a puppy, weak, tremoring, scratching at her face, or acting abnormal, please haver her seen by a vet. Best of luck with Poppy and her puppies.

My Lil chiweenie mated for the first time June 1st. And 2nd. Last Sat was 63 days. Her tests her large and hanging but hee belly is not big. I don't know what's going on with her.
I would recommend having her seen by your veterinarian. She may have experienced a pseudopregnancy where the hormones mimic pregnancy and can lead to milk production. Some small breed dogs have just one puppy at a time so it is also possible her belly just isn't that big - your veterinarian might recommend an x-ray or ultrasound to check and see if she is pregnant.

Hi there. You may not be able to feel the puppies move from the outside, depending on how many there are and where the uterus sits in her abdomen. She may have a small litter (just one or two pups), or she may not actually be pregnant if this hasn't been confirmed with your vet - females can lose a pregnancy partway through and re-absorb the fetuses, or can have something called a "false pregnancy" with abdominal enlargement and swelling of the mammary glands, which can look a lot like a real pregnancy. If you're concerned, I would recommend taking Willow to the vet for a check-up. He/she can take x-rays or do an ultrasound to see if pups are present, how many, and if they appear normal and healthy.

Yes, there is still time for Coco to get a bigger belly, but keep in mind that just like with human women, female dogs all carry puppies differently and some will get bigger than others. I hope this helps!

My Chihuahua is 5 weeks and 5 days pregnant, her stomach got very big,and her belly is kinda hard, not too hard, but kind of hard. Is this normal or should I worry?
If she has a lot of puppies in there it could very wedll be that the belly is being stretched now that they are growing a lot. As long as your dog i eating and drinking properly and otherwise happy, then there is nothing to worry about.

It is possible. the only way to know for sure is to have her x-rayed by your veterinarian. This would be recommended anyway so you know how many pups to expect. Since she is so close, start monitoring her body temperature. Use a rectal thermometer with sterile lube. Normal temp ranges from 100 F to 102.5 F. In most cases, labor will begin within 24 hours of a drop below 100 F.

There is a chance that her abdominal muscles are kind of overstretched and therefore she has a potbelly. However since she is an older dog I would monitor her water intake. If she drinks more than 50cc/kg of water in 24 hrs, she needs to have some blood tests checking for Cushings disease. Heavy panting is another typical sign of Hyperadrenocorticism (Cushings disease). The blood tests should also give an indication on her organ health and show up any problems with the liver, spleen and kidneys which could present with an enlarged abdomen.
