My puppy's breast lump popped after birth. What does it mean?

Hello, I'm concernee about my 1 year old puppy. She recently had puppies, but afterwards she had a hard giant lump on her breast. Our vet gave us medicine for the lump, but now the lump has popped and is now an open wound or her chest. Any Idea what this means?

I'm wondering if Furball had an abscess, and that is what has popped and cause an open wound. This is something that needs to be seen by a vet, and I would take her into one first thing in the morning for treatment. Best of luck.

When a client comes in with a pet that has an unknown mass, we typically consider the following as possibilities, taking many factors into account: a mass/tumor, an abscess, a cystic structure, an insect bite, an allergic reaction, or a bruise from trauma. If the structure has burst open, it is most likely not allergic or from an insect. Depending upon your dog's age, the time the lump has existed, the consistency of the fluid you have noted, and the presence / absence of any other clinical signs, one of the other options is most likely. Something the vet might be able to do is obtain some cellular material from the affected area, place it under a microscope, and see if there is any cellular material that is useful in obtaining a diagnosis. Hello and thank you for reaching out to Boop by Petco. It sounds like this wound that became a lump that is oozing fluid has become an abscess, or a pocket of infected fluid. Abscesses form when infection is trapped under the skin or within tissues such as fat or muscle. The bacteria will try to find a way out, so they can break through the skin and create a "draining tract" of pus. This should be addressed by your veterinarian, who will likely drain the abscess and open it up to allow continuous drainage. Antibiotics for at least 2 weeks will be needed, along with pain medications. Depending on the size of the wound/abscess, a bandage may be needed. I hope this is helpful! This looks like it could be a cyst or a skin tumor like a hemangioma. I find that once a skin growth ruptures it tends to happen again, so I would definitely recommend making an appointment to see your veterinarian. They will probably recommend surgically removing this growth.

It is very hard to say what the lump is without examining your dog and possibly taking a sample of the lump for pathology. It is possible that the lump is a mammary gland tumour (benign or malignant) but it really does not often happen in such young dogs. All you need to do at the moment is to keep the wound clean and make sure that Aubrey does not lick it. Once your vet is open, you need to take your dog for an appointment.

This is on my dog, it’s like a hold, I don’t know if I need to take her into the vet right now. Not bleeding!
There could be a few things that look like that. An infection that ruptured through the skin, a bite wound, a fly larva or a cyst that popped could all have this appearance. I would recommend to take Pepper into the vet within the next 24 hours to have an exam and likely antibiotics. Make sure to protect the area from Pepper licking it or scratching it as this will make it worse. Also make sure to clip the hair short and wash it with an antibacterial soap! I hope this helps!

Oh no, poor Pebbles! It's certainly possible she has an abscess, but if she is intact (not spayed), then it could be a mammary tumor. Poor girl that it's painful! Because it's painful, it's best that she is seen by a vet first thing in the morning. The vet can diagnose what is causing this lump, and then can discuss treatment otiose with you. If it is an abscess, it will need to be drained and flushed sterilely, and she will need antibiotics for the infection. Should it be a mammary tumor, then there's a 50% chance it's malignant. Depending on if it has spread or not, removing it surgically may be curative.

Hi there and thanks for posting! If you cat has a lump or mass that has appeared to have ruptured, I would visit your veterinarian right away. The mass may need to be removed or treated with antibiotics. Your veterinarian may also take a sample of the mass to determine what it is and if it needs to be removed. Thanks for using Boop by Petco! This is possibly an abscess. I recommend that you have her evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible for further assessment and treatment. If confirmed to be an abscess this is usually treated by drainage and flushing of the abscess as well as antibiotics. This usually resolves uneventfully. Good luck and have a good night!

It could be an abscess, it could also be a tumor, you must take him to the vet in order to get that treated, the fur in that area must be clipped off completely, the wound needs to be cleaned and analysed. if it is an abscess a course of antibiotics will solve the problem.

This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign.
