Dog's allergic reaction swelling returned. When to go back to vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 8 months and 14 days old | 14 lbs

I took my dog to the vet last night around 10pm after I noticed her eyes and nose had gotten swollen. They said it was an allergic reaction, gave her steroid and antihistamine shot, and sent us on our way with directive to give Benadryl every 8 hours for 2-3 days. This morning, about 8 hours later, one of her eyes started swelling again. Do we need to go back to the vet?

I would go ahead and give the Benadryl as directed and watch her closely. The swelling should start going back down. If it doesn't or if she starts to act weird or not eating/drinking or if the swelling gets worse, then yes, I would go back to your vet. Allergic reactions can come back within 24-48 hours which is why it is important to continue the Benadryl for that long. I hope this helps!
