Should I feed my cat more after dental surgery if she's hungry?

DR. Melanie of you see this great If not no worries ! My Kitty had dental surgery today and the vet tech said not to give her a lot of food the first night . About 2.5 hours ago I have her half of her normal amount and she's pacing around the room l think looking for food do you think it's okay if I give her more tonite ? thank you !

Hi Laila, I did see your post!!! I'm so glad the dental surgery went well today. Given that the vet tech said not to give her a lot of food tonight, I would follow those instructions. It will be ok for tonight for her to have a little less, tomorrow you can give her the normal amount. Hope all is good :-)

If you have soft food to feed her, like canned or moist food that would be easier on her sore gums right now. You should let your vet know that he is not eating. Your vet can prescribe pain medications and/or an appetite stimulant to help get him eating again. Offer him a variety of canned food and see if he will eat something.

This definitely sounds concerning. Sometimes the tooth extraction site can become infected, or in some rare situations nerves in the mouth can be affected by dental surgery. It's also possible that the dental is unrelated and that Danny has developed a kidney problem or other disease causing a decrease in appetite. I would definitely recommend a vet visit.

If she does not seem to be troubled by it I would not be overly concerned. It is best to feed canned food (pate), human baby foods (meat flavors and organic) or canned pumpkin (if she will eat it) - any of those can help with constipation.

It sounds like you're juggling a lot of work with all those cats! However, if the vet who did the procedure said to start the medication tomorrow, I would recommend that you *not* give the medication tonight. It is very likely that the vet gave an injection of a similar medication already while the cats were at the hospital, that will stay in their system until tomorrow, and that's why the vet wanted the next dose given tomorrow. If you give it tonight, that could lead to an overdose of the medication in the cat's system. So, do your best to follow the instructions on the medication as directed. I hope this helps!

Sometimes when cats wake up from surgery, they are very disoriented, and they can stumble around the cage. She could have accidentally hurt herself waking up from anesthesia. Without being there or seeing her in person, I can't say for certain, but I would give your vet a call to ask if they know why these bald spots have appeared. I would monitor her eye. Given that she is recovering from anesthesia, her behavior may be off. If she is still having problems with squinting in 48 hours, I would have her seen by a vet. It's better to wait until evening to feed her, as feeding her too soon after surgery and anesthesia may upset her stomach. I would follow the instructions from your vet.

As long as he is behaving normally, you can offer 1/4 of his meal and a 1/4 cup of water. Soak the food first to soften it in case his teeth and mouth are still sensitive. He likely received IV fluids during the procedure, so dehydration should not be a concern. You can probably feed him normally tomorrow.

My cat will be spayed tomorrow. After spaying shall I continue dry food that I was feeding her before or should I change her diet? If so what should I feed her?
The type of food won't make a lot of difference. What you should consider would be the quantity of food which should be slightly adapted to her needs. Unfortunately castration/spay changes slightly pet's metabolism and they tend to decrease their activity and put on some weight. It is very important not to increase the amount of food given. Hello! Talk to your veterinarian about what time she will need to stop eating the day prior to anesthesia. She may need an earlier dinner the night before her dental cleaning. Hello. Thank you for using Boop by Petco. Sorry to hear that Micole is having this issue. It is really best for you to ask your vet this question since they know your cat best. For now I would recommend you feed 60ml per day; split that up into multiple small meals. If you can, I would divide that into 4 to 6 feedings. Example: 10mls 6 times per day or 15ml 4 times per day. It really depends on how well Micole accepts the force feeding and how much you can get into him at one sitting. When you get a chance, call your vet and just verify that this amount seems appropriate. Hope this helps. If you have more questions feel free to post again. Best wishes.
