My dog has been limping and not using her hind leg. What helps?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Toy Poodle | Female | unspayed | 12 years and 6 months old | 11.05 lbs

My dog has been limping(lifting hind leg) for a long time. It started like early last year. I don't know what to do about it, and i don't have the money to bring her to the vet. She just hops on her hind leg. The leg she is lifting seems to have became skinnier and she does not use it anymore. Is it bad that i make her go for walks? She doesn't whine in pain. She cannot put it on the ground. What can i do to help her heal? She is still able to make the scratching motion but is unable to scratch.

Poor Chacha. Since it has been going on for awhile, there are many things that could be going on from a broken bone that healed wrong, a torn ligament in the knee, a severe luxating patella (knee cap), and much more. The main thing is to get her on some high quality joint supplements like dasuquin or flexadin w/UC-II. Also, if you can get her to swim a small amount in the tub or somewhere a few times a week, this is great rehab to help build up muscle in the rear leg. Finally, once you are able to take her to the vet, I would. The vet will hopefully be able to determine the cause of the injury and get her started on some pain meds to help if needed. I would not give any human pain meds as most are toxic to dogs. I hope this helps!
