My cat has a painful, firm lump near her spine. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Manx | Female | spayed | 9 lbs

Hi, my names hannah and my cat has a large firm bump on her that’s near her rip cage but more towards her spine. It’s so large it makes her fur stick up and it didn’t stick up before so that makes me think it’s grown which is very worrisome. And just now I noticed when I touched it, it bothered her she immediately would turn around and start licking my hand like “please don’t touch me there” But when I touch the other side of her body in the same spot she doesnt react quickly.

Hello Hannah Your kitty may have an abscess there (they usually are painful) or a cyst or a mass. Masses are not usually painful so it is more likely an abscess. If she is an inside/outside kitty she may have gotten into a fight with another cat She should be seen by a veterinarian for an exam of the "bump". If it is an abscess or cyst, it will need to be lanced, and if it is a mass, your vet may suggest to have it biopsied or removed. She also may need pain medicine and prescription antibiotics. I am sure Cookie will be fine!
