My Bernese Mountain Dog is shaking, panting, won't eat or drink. Why?

I have a female Bernese mountain dog she is 5 years old and last night she started shaking, and heavy heavy panting. She will not eat or drink water still this morning either.

Poor Finley! It could be that she is in pain for some reason, or could have a medical condition such as a heart problem or respiratory disease causing her symptoms. Given that this has come on suddenly and now she won't eat or drink, I think the best thing for her is to get her into a vet today. The cause of her problems needs to be diagnosed so she can be treated. Please call her vet now to get her in to be seen. Best of luck!

It sounds like she should be examined by a vet to determine the cause. Without an examination, if is impossible to know the cause. She could have an infection, pancreatitis, heart/lung problem, endocrine disease, back/neck pain, etc. Your vet can do a complete physical examination, run lab-work, and take x-rays, if needed, to help diagnose. Please call your vet and have her seen so treatment can be started as soon as possible. Hope she feels better soon!

Hi, and thanks for your question. This is a quite generic but concerning presentation. Differentials are many, from gastrointestinal diseases (infection/inflammations often dietary related) to any disease that can spread systemically (causing lethargy for example) like infection, and anything that can cause pain/discomfort. The approach must be logic, starting from offering different kind of food. A check up is needed if inappetence lasts for more than 24hours. Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor Bonita! She is adorable! There are many reasons for panting, shaking and hiding. She could have been scared by something, have a fever or she could be painful. If she is not eating or drinking and this behavior continues I recommend that you take her to the Vet for an exam. If they find that she is painful they will prescribe appropriate medications for the condition they diagnose her with. I hope this helps and I wish Bonita a speedy recovery!

I am sorry to hear that your pet is feeling sick! Unfortunately, the signs she is showing are very nonspecific. This could possibly be due to pain, nausea, difficulty breathing, seizure-like episodes, metabolic problems, or anxiety. The best things to do would be to have her examined by a veterinarian. It would alose be helpful if you were to record an episode so the veterinarian that is examining her could review that in conjunction with their examination. In addition, keep a journal of the episodes so to see how often they are occurring and if there is a pattern to them.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding your dog. Depending on the age and breed of your dog, it will make certain things more likely. For example, small breed dogs are prone to neck and back pain. This can come on suddenly and be excruciatingly painful. Large breed dogs tend to experience joint pain as they age. Puppies are more likely to experience pain as a result of trauma. Older dogs can have an internal illness that will make them pant and potentially drink more water. I recommend that your dog sees a veterinarian if the symptoms are persisting. Do not give any over-the-counter pain medication as these can be toxic to dogs. I hope this information helps!

These can be symptoms of many serious medical issues, anxiety, fear, pain, neurologic disease, infection, etc. I would recommend that you have him checked out by a vet to see what could be going on. After a thorough physical exam and discussion of his recent history, the vet may recommend diagnostics, such as blood work, x-rays, ultrasound, etc. to diagnose the cause.

Hello, sorry to hear about your pup. There are several causes for increased drinking and decreased appetite. However, it may be that he is just a bit cold. Some other causes could include anxiety. Finally underlying metabolic diseases such as kidney disease, cushings, hypothyroidism, or other forms of GI disease may cause this as well. If he continues to do this then he should be evaluated by a veterinarian. Diagnostics may include bloodwork, an abdominal x-ray, or even an ultrasound. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Hello! I'm sorry to hear that Eleanor might not be feeling well. There are several things that I think of when I hear about dogs that are trembling or shaking. First, dogs that tremble and shake may be experiencing pain. Conditions like luxating patellas (kneecaps that pop out of place) and back injuries come to mind with smaller dogs like Bichons and Shih-tzus. You may not have seen the initial injury, but if they "tweak" an old or chronic injury, it can make them shake, pant, and want to be clingy, as they don't understand why they are hurting. Next, behavior changes in middle-aged dogs could be caused by metabolic disorders, like hypothyroidism or Cushing's disease. I would also expect to see other symptoms with these disorders, like weight changes and a poor hair coat, so if you see any other physical changes, this could account for Eleanor's shaking. Lastly, stress can also cause shaking and trembling behavior (like from storms or major construction going on in the neighborhood).
