My dog vomits often but is otherwise normal. What can I do at home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 6 years and 10 months old | 12 lbs

My dog, Paco, is a Chihuahua mix and has recently been puking often. He's not lethargic, he's eating and drinking normal, he has normal bowel movements, there's nothing in his feces. He will puke more then once, right in a row then he'll be fine.. it's been like this for about a week... I just need help for my dog and I can't afford to take him to the vet.

Just like humans, dogs can vomit for many reasons. Unfortunately, without knowing the cause, it's impossible to know how best to help Paco. Here is a link with extensive information about vomiting: https://www.petcoach.co/article/vomiting-in-dogs/ You may look into financing through Care Credit or Scratch Pay (information available online) if Paco needs to be examined. If Paco is continuing to vomit despite fasting/bland diet for 24 hours, I recommend to have him examined by the veterinarian. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

Unfortunately, if you are not the owner of Paco, there isn't much you can do without permission. However, if Paco is very ill and you suspect he's being abused/neglected (by not providing veterinary care), you can try contacting local animal control authorities to see what can legally be done in your area (IE if you can bring him to the vet with permission, etc). Vomiting yellow can sometimes be a bile vomit which can happen if his stomach is getting too empty (especially if he's only fed one meal a day). Feeding several smaller meals throughout the day can sometimes help this. If he's vomiting a lot, it's worsening, or you're seeing other signs of illness, however, veterinary care is needed.
