My neutered dog's penis swells, then shrinks after he pees. Normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 6 years old | 65 lbs

Neutered 6 year old male. Came home and noticed his bulbus glandi were swollen but no erection. Took him out to pee and the swelling disappeared. Is this because he really had to pee? Like a morning wood kinda thing?

Those glands randomly enlarge and go down usually due to excitement. It is not really sexually related so it is not surprising that he did not have an erection concurrently. It may be related to him needing to urinate but no one knows for sure if that would be the case. Regardless, it is nothing to be worried about.

It sounds like what you are seeing is Rollo's bulbourethral glands. These are a normal part of a dog's anatomy, and they appear when the dog is excited or aroused. Even if a dog is neutered, he can still become aroused. There's nothing to worry about with this, it's perfectly normal :-)
