My dog was exposed to parvo. Are his vaccinations enough? What about shoes?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered | 9 years and 4 months old | 7 lbs

I work with someone who's dog just passed away from parvo. My dog has his vactionations. Will he be okay? I kept my shoes outside, tho I am not sure of that's nessasary to do or good for me to do.

Because Snickers has had his vaccines, as long as they are up to date, he should be protected from parvovirus. By up to date I mean having regular boosters of the vaccine every three years. If it's been longer than three years since he had his last parvo vaccine, then there is a chance he could be susceptible to it. It's fine to keep your shoes outside, it's always better to be safe than sorry in my opinion! I hope this helps!

Unfortunately Pixel can get Parvo if you unknowingly walk through the virus and bring it in on your shoes. I recommend to leave the shoes outside the house and away from him. Each vaccine gives him some protection but he will not be fully protected until he finishes the whole series. He should be a vaccine every 3 weeks until he is 16 weeks old. Ollie should have sufficient immunity against parvovirus. The typical vaccination schedule is to booster the parvovirus combination vaccine every 3-4 weeks until 16-20 weeks of age then repeat at about one year of age. After that the vaccine is given every 1-3 years. If he had the vaccine schedule as a puppy and then had a booster at 8 months he should be fine.

If your dogs are vaccinated against parvo, they will be fine. Should they not be vaccinated, get that done asap. It's good that she is changing her shoes, and have her keep clothes at her dad's house and separate clothes at your house if the dogs are not vaccinated.

Can a two year old dog get parvo if he's had a parvo shot?
Most adult dogs that were appropriately vaccinated against parvo as puppies - meaning 3 different vaccinations, given no earlier than 8 weeks of age and proceeding at 3 - 4 week intervals - are protected against contracting parvovirus, as long as they receive booster vaccinations as recommended. Typically, the recommendation is one vaccination on the one year anniversary of the last puppy vaccination, and then re-vaccination every 3 years after. Just one parvo vaccination is unlikely to be completely effective, but it may provide some protection, and if he contracts the disease it will likely be a milder form.

At this point, Abraxas isn't protected, and would need two vaccinations, 3-4 weeks apart to be protected. The best you can do is keep them completely separated and make sure to change clothes and wash hands if you go next door.

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Boop by Petco. Buddy should absolutely be vaccinated for parvovirus if he is not already. A normal course of puppy vaccines (ie Rabies and DAPP) includes vaccination against parvovirus. I recommend asking your veterinarian if Buddy is up to date on his vaccinations, and definitely have him vaccinated if he is not. I hope this is helpful!

My dog was around another dog that ended up dyng from parvo. At the time we had no,clue she had it. My dog isn't quite two yet but she's had her vaccines, is she still suseptible to get it.
Hi there. Assuming Sophie has had her full vaccination schedule and appropriate boosters then the likelihood of her becoming ill with parvovirus is very rare. Of course, some animals don’t respond as well to vaccines as others, but that is a rare occurrence. If for some reason she does get sick and you have proof of vaccination given by a veterinarian then most vaccine companies will pay for treatment. However, if the vaccines were not given by a veterinarian they will not cover treatment. I hope she stays nice and healthy! Thanks for using Pet Coach!

It's true that parvo is very stable in the environment and can last as long as a year, but I would not be too worried if it's been a few years since the yard was contaminated. It's always difficult to know exactly where they get infected, but it's unlikely for one to get infected in an environment where there has been multiple years without known contamination. I would not worry too much about letting your pup in the yard, but I do understand your concern. Having one vaccine is helpful for preventing infection and can keep an infection from getting too bad. However, it's not 100% effective. He will be most protected when he gets his last booster around 16-20 weeks of age. It's important to ensure he gets vaccinated every 2-4 weeks until that last booster, because that will protect him the most. It will also be good to limit his contact with other dogs and other areas where dogs have been until his last booster. I hope that helps and all is well with Bentley.

Below are the recommendations for vaccines from the American Animal Hospital Association. According to these guidelines which are widely accepted, 1 more DHPP vaccine (distemper, hepatitis, Parvo, parainfluenza) should be sufficient; she will then need to have that repeated in a year. https://www.aaha.org/public_documents/guidelines/vaccination_recommendation_for_general_practice_table.pdf To clarify, Parvovirus CAN survive in the environment (soil, etc) for 6 months to 1 year or longer depending on conditions. (The longest time I could find cited was 2 years in the environment). I say that not to alarm you, but to clarify that some caution should be taken. Since its been nearly 2 years, it is unlikely that your house and yard are a source of parvo, and I do not think you need to do anything specific to disinfect or decontaminate. The most important thing you can do to keep your dogs safe from parvovirus is to keep them up to date on the parvovirus vaccine. I would call your vet immediately and inquire about vaccinating the puppy, and watch for any signs of diarrhea. If your dogs are up to date on their vaccines, then their risk is very, very low. Again, watch for any signs of diarrhea or GI upset but I wouldn't worry too much about your dogs if they've been well vaccinated!
