My Chow Chow puppy is a picky eater. What dog food should I feed?

I feed Royal canin junior for medium sized dogs to Heisenberg, and more often he is reluctant of eating, as ive searched throught some pages online, chow chows’ diet should be cut down on meet, any type, is it true?? can u help me with some diet tips for him?

I love Chow Chows! I have a red female Chow Chow who is almost 10 years old, and she is just the best dog. No, it's not true that Chow Chow's diets should be cut down on meat. I personally feed my Chow Iams dog food, and she does great on it. There could be a couple of reasons why Heisenberg is reluctant to eat. He could have a dental problem that is making it painful for him to eat, or it could be he is suffering from a medical illness causing a decrease in appetite. Due to this, I would have him checked out by a vet in the next couple of days. just to make sure everything is ok health wise with him. If he is healthy, then it may simply be that he doesn't like the flavor of food you are feeding. Royal Canin is an excellent brand of food, and he is close to needing to be fed an adult food. You could try switching his food to Royal Canin medium breed adult food, or using another brand such as Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, or Iams. If you do switch his food brand, do it slowly to avoid any GI upset. I hope this helps!

The two brands that seem to be most palatable are Royal Canin and Purina ProPlan. Also, as long as your pet is healthy, its ok if he skips a couple meals. Dogs are smart and they often train humans to give them something else. Have him examined if illness or a medical cause is suspected. I would recommend feeding a diet from a company with a good reputation, who employs veterinary nutritionists to help formulate their diets and does AAFCO feeding trials to prove that their diets provide complete and balanced nutrition when fed long-term. Companies that meet these criteria include Iams, Purina, and Royal Canin. Purina Dog Chow Complete Adults would be a very reasonable choice.

No, Bella has to have Puppy Chow. She needs higher amounts of calcium, calories, and protein than adult dogs, and only a puppy food will provide that for her. She may not like Puppy Chow, so other brands I recommend include Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. I hope this helps!

What a cute puppy! With him being 7 months old and a small breed dog, I think that Lucas is slowing down on his growing. This can cause a reduction in his appetite. I find that the more that we change a dog's food- the more pickier they become. I would stick with one brand, offer 1/3 of slightly less than the daily recommended amount (they sell dog food, so the more he eats the more you buy) three times daily. Give him a set amount of time and then pick up the bowl. This will create some urgency. He will eat if he is hungry. The more we change and add things, the more he will wait to eat to see what good stuff will be added. I would keep track of his body condition score- you should be able to feel his ribs with a little bit of fat cover, but not see them. As long as he is in good body condition, I would not worry. The best dry diets are often the less palatable ones as well, in very picky dogs this can of course becomes a challenge and a problem. You may want to try Royal canin, it's not the best but it is still a good quality food, it is also very tasty for most dogs.

I'm sorry Prince is being so stubborn! It sounds like he's being a picky eater, and constantly changing foods will lead him to be even pickier. I would pick one brand of food and stick with it. Brands I like include Royal Canin, Hill's Science diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. Put his food down for him for 15-20 minutes, and then take it away after that time even if he hasn't eaten it all. Then do not give him any more food until his next meal time. No treats or human food at all. That's very important because he needs to learn that he has to eat when his dog food is put down in front of him. Then at his next meal time, leave the food down for 15-20 minutes, taking it away after that time. By being consistent with this, Prince will learn he has to eat his food when it's meal time or he will go hungry. Good luck, I hope this helps!

Chapatis, oats, and rice are not a balanced or healthy diet for a dog. Dogs need protein and calcium as well as many other vitamins and nutrients, and that diet you provided doesn't give him that. I see that Max is six months old, so he needs a puppy formulated food. Puppies need higher amounts of calories, protein, and calcium than adult dogs, and a puppy formulated food will provide that for him. I would not give him human food any longer, and put him on a puppy dog food until he is 12 months. Then he should be on an adult dog food. Brands I recommend include Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. I would also have a health check for him with the vet. He may be feeling unwell from have a nutrient deficient diet, or he could also have a medical illness causing the loss of appetite. Please keep in mind that even if it is a medical illness causing him to lose his appetite, the current diet you are feeding him is very poor and he needs to be on a puppy food.

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Boop by Petco. I’m sorry to hear that Chewy isn’t interested in eating his food. You can certainly try changing up his diet with a different dog food, but I recommend changing it slowly. For example, mix in a new diet with his old diet first to see if he will eat this. Alternatively, you can offer him boiled chicken and rice, which is a bland diet that may help settle his stomach. If he isn’t interested in eating any food for more than 24 hours, I recommend bringing him to your veterinarian. Inappetance can be a sign of underlying systemic disease, such as liver or kidney disease, hormonal imbalances, inflammation or infection. If he isn’t improving at home, your veterinarian may recommend blood work to look for evidence of underlying disease, or may recommend x-rays of the abdomen to look for any abnormalities. HI, thanks for using Boop by Petco! I am sorry that you are going through this! Coke oh Cola is super cute and a great name! You didn't indicate if you were feeding her dry or canned. If you are feeding dry then I recommend buying canned and either adding a table spoon of canned and mixing with water or changing her to all canned food. I think the biggest thing with picky dogs is to try not to let them know if bothers you. Dogs are smart and will hold out of more delicious foods if they know that is an option. I recommend you put the food down, walk away, give her 2 hours to eat, then pick it up. Do this twice daily or how ever many times you want to feed her. I recommend you pick a combination of food: either dry with canned, all canned, or a combo of both with chicken/veggies/human food. It should be the same every meal and try to not react. Don't hover, fuss, stare, yell. She has her chance to eat. Over time, be in 1-3 days she will choose to eat over starvation. With that being s
